Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that there has been a “robbery pattern” involving crimes committed by a “number of migrants.” This comes as asylum-seekers arrive in waves to the Big Apple from the southern border.

During a press conference, Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged, “Do I believe that there are some migrants who are committing crimes in the city? Yes. Yes.” He emphasized that criminal activity is not exclusive to migrants and asylum-seekers.

He also noted that individuals from various backgrounds, both migrant and nonimmigrant, are involved in criminal behavior. Crime statistics from the New York Police Department indicate an 11.3% rise in vehicle grand larcenies and a 6.9% increase in felony assaults in October 2023.

During the same month, robberies experienced a 3.5% increase but an overall decrease of 4.8% in robberies year to date. Despite his acknowledgment of crimes involving migrants, Mayor Adams emphasized that attributing the rise in crimes solely to immigrants would be incorrect.

He clarified, “I do not want anyone to walk away thinking that the [grand larceny auto] increase we saw in the city was just migrants. No, it’s not. Long-term New Yorkers also committed [grand larceny auto].”

While acknowledging crimes committed by migrants, he reiterated that such actions are not exclusive to this group. More than 161,000 illegal immigrants have arrived in New York and sought aid since spring 2022.

Anticipating a surge in immigrants entering the city in the upcoming months, Mayor Adams is preparing for increased arrivals. Meanwhile, various Democratic mayors caution that they are nearing maximum capacity and urging the federal government to intervene.

“New York City has begun to see another surge of migrants arriving, and we expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Texas Gov. Abbott’s cruel and inhumane politics,” Adams said in December.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have criticized Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) for transporting immigrants to their cities. They accuse Abbott of attempting to “sow seeds of chaos” and argue that he has failed to establish a coordinated, humanitarian plan for managing the influx of migrants.

Taking a stringent stance, the mayors have imposed restrictions on bus drop-off zones for travel companies bringing immigrants into their cities. They have confined these zones to a narrow timeframe and issued threats of fines or legal action against companies that drop off homeless immigrants.

Weeks ago, Mayor Adams implemented an ordinance that buses must arrive between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays at a designated drop-off site. Additionally, the executive order stipulates that bus operators must provide at least 32 hours of advance notice for arrivals, thereby restricting drop-off hours to the specified times.

To bypass these regulations, bus companies have resorted to dropping off immigrants in suburbs or even different states, compelling them to utilize transit systems to reach the cities.

This has prompted various suburbs around Chicago to enact resolutions prohibiting immigrants from boarding in hotels or being dropped off within their villages.
