A bank clerk had flirted with the husband shortly after they got married, inspiring the creation of the 1973 original. The song was made from Parton’s perspective, begging “Jolene” not to take her husband just because she could. In the song, she goes on to acknowledge the clerk’s beauty, describing it as without equal.
When the news of Beyoncé making a sample spread, her fans made claims that they expected the singer not to plead as Parton did. This turns out to be true, as she decided to reimagine the song and made it sound like a warning.

Turing away from Parton’s style but following the lyric’s pattern, she changes her words to “I’m warning you, don’t come for my man.” The song continues, “You’re gorgeous beyond compare. It takes beyond attractiveness and alluring looks. To stand in the way of a happy guy and his family You don’t want any heat with me, Jolene? I’m a woman too, and the games you play are old.
She continues to tell how she raised her man and their kids, adding that she knows his behavior better than even he does. She continues with that while understanding why “Jolene” wants her man, but if she doesn’t want trouble, she should go do it with someone else.

Parton was surprised to hear the song’s revisions, as she had been unaware of them before its release. She admitted that while Beyoncé has asked for permission to make her version, she never expected her to take liberties.
