California State Governor, Gavin Newsom has applauded himself, claiming the state has created a model for solving homelessness problems. Newson suggested the idea that other states should follow the model. However, Californians have taken to their social media to criticize and mock the governor for his claims.
In 2024, regardless of the efforts and policies put in place, homelessness in America remains higher than before. According to data released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, over 653,000 Americans are homeless. This roughly translates to one in every 500 Americans being homeless.
According to further reports, while New York and Florida have some of the worst cases of homelessness, California remains at the top of the list. However, despite California’s ranking, Newson still believes the state should be a reference point for solving homelessness.
During a press release, Newson announced that the state was releasing $3.3 billion to tackle its homelessness problem. Consequently, after his statements, there was a lot of criticism focused on his homelessness “advice.”

When he was giving his speech, Newson referred to the reduction in veteran homelessness. He seemed to have mistaken that specific for the whole data. According to the report, between 2014 and 2024, there has been a 30 percent drop in veterans homelessness in the state.
However, while the reduction is applaudable, it does not reflect the overall homelessness level in California. According to a federal survey on homelessness, 28% of the nation’s total homeless population resides in the Golden State.
Taking to social media, many critics believe that Newson’s assessment was from a delusional standpoint. According to the Daily Mail, Los Angeles’s homeless population stands at over 65,000 people, more than any other city in America. Between 2023 and 2024, the city’s homeless has increased by a staggering 9 percent.

Additionally, California has a total homeless population of 123,000 people, which is 8 times more than Florida’s 15,000. In January 2024, Newson suggested the creation of a mental health program, in addition to the state homelessness program. Newson said that Proposition 1 had backed the program, in turn securing more funds for its advancement. He added that the state was eager to put the released funding to further improve the program.
In March 2024, residents of California were asked to vote on Proposition 1. The purpose of the proposition was to ensure that every homeless or at-risk person had access to mental health services. The proposition was passed by a mere 0.2 difference in votes after the state residents voted.
Many Californians have voiced out their opinion on the bill, claiming the cost for its implementation was too high. The fund that was given would ensure the creation of 4000 homes and 6800 treatment beds. Many critic have decided to voice their concerns about the spending.

Taking X, one user asked if he had missed anything and what was the model about. Another user wrote “No, No, Newsom is right. The homeless crisis in California has made several nonprofit executives millionaires.”A critic had written that maybe Newson’s suggestion for solving homelessness was the other way around. A reference to the state’s high homeless count.
Other critics had written that Newsom was right and that California was a national model but in a negative sense. Adding that, the country and other states should the the model to what not to do.
