After faking her Alabama abduction in 2023, Carlee Russell is speaking out one year after her stunt took the country by surprise. During the entirety of her ordeal, her fake kidnapping and subsequent charges down to sentencing, Russell never posted anything online.

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, Shaderoom posted a screenshot of Russell’s post on Instagram. Russell, who set her account to private, returned to the image-sharing app to celebrate her 27th birthday. In the screenshot, Russell stated that she had no intention of posting about her birthday, but she feels grateful for God’s goodness.
Russell wrote, “God not only allowed me to see another year, but he changed the trajectory of my life from the negative place I was in this time last year. To those who have been there for me, your kindness and support have meant the world to me.”
In another paragraph, Russell wrote that receiving various forms of support kept her going each day. Russell added, “Thank you sincerely for helping me find the light in the darkest of moments.”

What Happened to Carlee Russell
As previously stated, Russell’s comments come after a year of her 49-hour disappearance. On July 24, 2023, Russell allegedly made a snack stop at Target in Hoover. Subsequently, Russell reported to the police that she saw a semi-naked toddler wandering alone on the road.
However, when the Hoover police arrived, she was nowhere to be found, although her car, phone, and wig were at the location. After further investigation, the police found out that Russell had staged the entire disappearance. Additionally, there was no semi-naked child on the highway, as it was a ploy to get the police’s attention.
According to the investigation, before her disappearance, Russell had conducted several online searches. These searches were regarding Amber Alerts, the movie “Taken,” and how to quietly steal from a cash register. Russell also googled bus tickets from Birmingham to Nashville at the time.

It remains a mystery where Russell spent the entire 49 hours of her disappearance before showing up at her parent’s home. On July 26, 2023, Russell appeared at her parents’ door barefoot and alone. Russell’s original story was that she stopped being the half-naked toddler when someone grabbed her.

However, before the end of July 2023, Russell’s narrative unfolded as a lie. The majority of Russell’s statements had not been “able to corroborate,” according to the local police department and investigators, and “continued investigation had cast doubt on most of Ms. Russell’s version.”
In the days preceding her disappearance, she searched the following websites: “Birmingham bus station,” “How to take money from a register without getting caught,” “Do you have to pay for an Amber Alert?” and “One-way bus ticket from Birmingham to Nashville.” In a news release, the Hoover Police Department said that they had not received any more complaints regarding a toddler strolling down the highway. Russell acknowledged that she lied to her lawyer about the whole incident and that she was not kidnapped. Additionally, Russell has refused to disclose the reason behind her actions.

In September 2023, Russell’s ex-boyfriend, Thomar Simmons, came to address rumors that he had cheated on Russell with a stripper. A rumor that claims it was the incident that gave her the idea to stage her kidnapping. Thomar claimed that the entire experience had traumatized him.
He also revealed that in the weeks preceding the fake kidnapping, they were in a good place. Thomas said that Russell traveled to New York City along with him and his family. However, Thomas admitted upon their return that he and Russell had a small quarrel and that it was nothing to kidnap oneself over.

What Does Carlee Russell’s Future Hold?
Prosecutors and the Hoover Police Department did not take Russell’s acts lightly. On July 28, 2024, Russell was arrested and charged with two misdemeanors related to false reporting. Russell posted her $2,000 bond on July 28, 2024.
In October 2023, a judge found her guilty of the crimes and mandated that she pay $831 in compensation for each allegation. Russell’s sentencing came in March 2024. Although she did not go to jail, Russell was given 100 hours of community service and mandatory mental health therapy. Russell was made to a reparation fee of $17,974.88. Russell apologized in court for the first time during the hearing for her acts and their consequences.
