Death claimed the life of an 8-year-old Kentucky boy after he consumed strawberries at a school fundraiser, according to reports.
Fruits exist to nourish the human body. That’s what this young boy thought when he downed several sweet strawberries at a school fundraiser some days ago. Unfortunately, instead of nourishing him, the fruits he ate ended up killing him.
The Madisonville Police Department got a distress call about an unresponsive child around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, according to local outlet 14 News. According to the outlet, the child, whose identity remains private, ate several strawberries at a school fundraiser on Thursday.
He started experiencing an allergic reaction shortly after and began developing a rash. His family took him to the emergency room, but they brought him home hours later. The following day, the family tried to wake the boy up for school, but he was unresponsive.

The news outlet has also reported that several other people had to visit a hospital after eating the same strawberries.
“While we were investigating, several staff at the hospital had advised that other people had come into the hospital complaining of rashes and other ailments concurrent with some type of allergic reaction. And they had ate strawberries from this fundraiser,” the police department told 14 News.
It forced the Health Department to investigate the strawberries sold at the fundraiser. On Friday, March 15, the Hopkins County Health Department addressed the issue. In a statement, the department warned people not to eat the strawberries from the local school fundraiser.

“The Hopkins County Health Department is issuing a caution advising citizens not to eat any strawberries purchased by the school fundraiser for Madisonville North Hopkins High School and Hopkins County Central High School athletics,” Public Health Director Denise Beach said in the statement.
The health department has said it will be testing the strawberries. “Currently, the Department of Public Health Environmentalists are taking samples of the strawberries to the state lab for testing,” Beach said. “Although this incident could be unrelated, the decision has been made to exercise caution and advise not eating any of these strawberries.”
The department also advised the school to dispose of any remaining strawberries from the fundraiser as they continue their investigation. Strawberries are not naturally poisonous in nature, but people can develop allergies to them.

Various theories could explain what led to the tragedy that claimed the boy’s life. It could be allergies, but since it affected several other people, the cause may be something worse. For instance, there could be microbial contamination of the fruits. Unfortunately, it can be deadly, especially if not caught quickly.
