Arizona investigators have increased their investigation into alleged irregularities in Arizona’s election process. They have issued grand jury subpoenas to several people associated with Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign to overturn Joe Biden’s election victory.

The subpoenas indicated that the investigation at the state level was intensifying, especially with the 2024 presidential election approaching. They showed that Attorney General Kris Mayes, a Democrat, is ready to decide whether to charge Trump’s allies in Arizona. This includes 11 fake Republican supporters who pretended to be presidential electors in December 2020.

Six people were given anonymity to disclose information about the continuing investigation. However, the attorney general’s office did not comment on the matter. We are unsure whether Mayes is considering those associated with Trump’s national campaign. Or it’s uncertain if her focus will be on Arizona GOP officials and activists who supported Trump’s efforts to challenge the state’s election results.

In November, Mayes told CNN that the investigation was “robust.” Arizona prosecutors had been questioning witnesses about meetings that Trump attended, where discussions about presenting fake GOP electors in various states took place. These meetings reportedly included one in the Oval Office on December 16, 2020.

Mayes’ investigators are also investigating “alternate electors” who submitted paperwork falsely stating that Trump had won Arizona. They ask questions about Trump, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and Trump’s attorneys, John Eastman and Kenneth Chesebro.

Chesebro, who played a crucial role in Trump’s plan to set up false elector in six states won by Biden, admitted guilt for his involvement in Georgia. He was questioned about the December 2020 Oval Office meeting, which he had previously discussed with investigators in Michigan.

According to sources, Chesebro informed Trump that he still had a chance to win during this meeting. “I ended up explaining that Arizona was still hypothetically possible because the alternate electors had voted,” Chesebro told Michigan state investigators. He later added that this made it “clear to Trump that maybe it hadn’t been before, that we had until January 6 to win.”

On December 14, 2020, fake electors supporting Trump met at the Arizona Republican Party headquarters. They live-streamed their actions as they planned to sign documents declaring themselves as Arizona’s true electoral representatives. But, by then, Biden’s victory in the state had already been confirmed.

Even though the results were certified, some fake electors still pushed Vice President Mike Pence to reject the genuine Democratic slate of electors. Some Arizona Republicans supported Trump’s efforts after the election, including former state GOP chairwoman Kelli Ward, who was among the 11 fake electors. Two other people involved, Jake Hoffman and Anthony Kern, are state senators.

Mayes might be the last prosecutor to file charges connected to Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election result. At the federal level, special counsel Jack Smith accused Trump of a conspiracy to disenfranchise millions of voters. In Georgia, state prosecutors charged Trump and 18 associates with conspiracy to interfere in the election.

George Terwilliger, an attorney representing Meadows, was asked about the escalation of the Arizona probe. He said, “As the Supreme Court made clear yet again in the Trump v. Anderson decision, federal elections are federal matters. The fiasco in Georgia demonstrates what happens when state officials take it upon themselves to police federal matters.”
