Jon Stewart tugged at heartstrings when he tearfully talked about his dog dying. The comedian got emotional on Monday, February 26, 2024, breaking down on “The Daily Show.” Stewart’s tearful farewell to his dog, Dipper, had folks open their wallets.
As a result, donations were pouring in for the New York Shelter he mentioned the pup came from. Viewers started sending money to Animal Haven, the NYC no-kill animal shelter where Stewart met the pup. Several days later, the money was still rolling in.
“We’re just shy of $50,000,” Tiffany Lacey, Animal Haven’s executive director, told CBS News. “This is a big deal, and it’s unexpected,” she said of the donations. According to Lacey, the money came in from more than 500 new donors, and the funds will help the shelter.
Lacey noted that it will pay for general care of their animals, operating support, vet care, food, staff time, and dog walks. “This is in memory of Dipper, so the donations will be used for the dogs,” Lacey said. “Especially vet care, training, food, and treats,” Lacey added.

The no-kill shelter in Manhattan reportedly has an operating budget of about $3 million. Also, it houses about 100 dogs and cats at a time. “The Daily Show” segment that moved viewers to send the shelter money had Stewart relaying how he met his dog. The comedian narrated how Dipper entered his life about 12 years ago.
Jon Stewart said his kids, then six and seven, wanted to raise money for the shelter by selling cupcakes they had baked. “They brought out this one-ish-year-old brindle pit bull hit by a car in Brooklyn and lost his right leg,” Stewart said before breaking down.

“They put the dog in my lap, and we left feeling really good that we’d helped this great organization.” He added, “We also left with this one-ish brindle pit bull that we called Dipper.” “It was love at first sight, I think, for both of them,” said Lacey, recalling the moment.
The shelter’s director recalled Jon Stewart sitting with the puppy in his lap for the entire event. In addition, she said the dog was always swimming and jumping around. “He didn’t need four legs.” Stewart said, “In a world of good boys, he was the best.”

The comedian further relayed how Dipper came to work with him each day. Furthermore, he noted that Dipper managed to do what the Taliban could not: frighten Malala Yousafzai. Afterward, he showed a video of the women’s rights activist and Nobel Prize winner fleeing from a barking Dipper. “Oh dear, it’s a dog!” Yousafazi said, screaming.
Jon Stewart ended the heartwarming segment by admonishing viewers to help abandoned pets. He said, “My wish for you is one day you find that dog, that one dog that is the best.” According to Lacey, Stewart and his family have adopted multiple pets from Animal Haven. Also, Lacey noted that they have implored others to consider adopting animals.
