According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has been quietly producing at least one movie based on George R.R. Martin’s huge fantasy universe. Multiple sources further claim the project is in the early stages of production, with no filmmaker, cast, or writer involved.

However, the company is interested in exploring the possibility of Westeros entering cinemas. The move could indicate a shift in the company’s strategy for the property. The showrunners of the first Game of Thrones series (David Benioff and Dan Weiss) famously planned to end the series with three feature films rather than a 2019 finale.

Martin was also interested in the idea of making a movie, and the author told The Hollywood Reporter in 2014 that ideas were being discussed. HBO rejected the notion for a long time, preferring to keep the prestige series as an HBO product.

HBO debuted the hit prequel series “House of the Dragon” in 2022, and its second season premiered recently. The network also plans to premiere the prequel series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” in 2025.

Other ideas are also being developed. One tantalizing undiscovered zone remains narratives set after the original series, as all movie sequel proposals to date have been prequels. While nothing is set in stone yet, here’s all you need to know about the “Game of Thrones” movie.

What Is the Game of Thrones Movie About?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the movie will be based on George R.R. Martin’s “fantasy universe” (which is rather vague), and Warner Bros has been “quietly developing” it.

“Multiple sources” also said the project is still in its early production phases, with no director, writer, or cast yet. The film would be either a remake or a sequel to the “Song of Ice and Fire” novel series. While Warner Bros. is hush-hush about the movie for now, Deadline says the production company is “extending the Game of Thrones franchise.”

HBO, Warner Bros.’ television network, spent millions of dollars on “Game of Thrones. ” The show received 59 Primetime Emmy Awards and has a massive fanbase that grew with each season.

Matthias Frey, chair of the Department of Media, Culture, and Creative Industries at City, University of London, told Business Insider that a “Game of Thrones” film is a “no-brainer.” The “Game of Thrones” announcement comes during a challenging year for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The company has experienced a year of ups and downs at the box office. It produced three of 2024’s biggest movie hits — “Dune: Part Two,” “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” — and co-produced the $370 million “Twisters” revival.

Their previous summer blockbusters, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “The Watchers,” failed. They exceed their projected production budgets by a few million dollars.

Amid these failures, Deadline claimed in July, citing unnamed sources, that Warner Bros. Discovery had laid off another batch of employees in production, business affairs, and finance.

The biggest flop of the year was “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the sequel to the billion-dollar 2019 film “Joker,” which has grossed $201 million to date. Variety claimed the film’s production budget was projected to be $200 million.

The “Game of Thrones” film could be a “last-ditch move to shore up their base with a reliable franchise” following recent misfires.

Since becoming CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery in 2022, David Zaslav has stated that his primary goal for the firm is to extend its big brands. This includes “Harry Potter,” “DC,” and “The Lord of the Rings.”

A “Harry Potter” TV series relaunch was announced last year. This followed the box office failure of the “Fantastic Beasts” spin-off series. Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” and Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” universes have both expanded to the small screen with “Dune: Prophecy” and “The Penguin.”
