Following an allegation of plagiarism, Adele’s song is set to be removed from streaming platforms as a Brazilian judge orders its ban globally. On Friday, December 13, 2024, Judge Victor Torres issued an injunction against Adele’s “Million Years Ago” in Rio de Janeiro’s sixth commercial court.
The judge mandated that “Million Years Ago” be removed from streaming services and platforms worldwide. This injunction was confirmed and reported by Agence France Presse. According to Agence France Presse, the injunction placed a fine of $8,000 for every act of non-compliance in Brazil.
Upon violation of the injunction, the Brazilian branches of Adele’s labels, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, will be liable. Adele’s song “Million Years Ago” was a track from her 2015 album “25,” which allegedly shares similarities with Martinho Da Vila’s rendition of “Mulheres.”
The Brazillian court ruling has sparked mixed emotions from fans of the singer, who are curious about why the court ordered the removal of the song from all streaming platforms. Here’s all we know.
Why Was Adele’s Song Ordered to Be Removed From Streaming Platforms?
According to the injunction, Judge Victor Torres ordered the labels to immediately stop the usage, modification, distribution, or commercialization of the song worldwide. Following the 2015 accusation, Toninho Geraes, the composer of the Brazilian song, filed a copyright suit against Adele for plagiarism in 2021.

Notably, Adele co-wrote the 2015 song alongside music producer Greg Kurstin. Following the proceeding of the plagiarism case, Torres sought an injunction to prevent further commercialization of the song. Speaking with Agence France Presse, Geraes’ lawyer, Fredimio Trotta, stated that his company aims to block Adele’s song from global media.
Trotta further proceeded to denounce the “parasitic use” of Brazilian music. Additionally, in 2015, fans of the late Kurdish musician Ahmet Kaya criticized Adele’s song “Million Years Ago.” Consequently, fans began drawing parallels between Adele’s song and Kaya’s “Acilara Tutunmak.” However, the plagiarism claims never evolved into a legal dispute.
The ban on Adele’s “Million Years Ago” followed the conclusion of her Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum. Speaking on her Las Vegas “Weekends With Adele” show, the singer stated that she will miss the shows terribly. However, she reiterated that she’s more than ready for a break, a desire she had expressed earlier in 2024.
