Luigi Mangione was charged with murder in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 26-year-old, who had already been recognized as a person of interest, was arrested on guns and other crimes in Pennsylvania on Monday, 9th of December, after being found at a McDonald’s in Altoona during a large manhunt for the shooter.

Who Is Luigi Mangione?
Luigi Mangione was born and raised in Maryland. He is linked to a well-known Maryland family that owns country clubs, healthcare institutions, and real estate businesses. He is also a relative to Maryland state Delegate Nino Mangione, who represents parts of Baltimore County.
Nicholas and Mary Mangione, Mangione’s paternal grandparents, were real estate entrepreneurs who acquired the Turf Valley Country Club in 1978 and the Hayfields Country Club in Hunt Valley in 1986. According to his LinkedIn profile, Mangione graduated from the Gilman School, a private all-boys school in Baltimore, in 2016.

He was the school’s valedictorian and captain of its robotics team. In addition, he got a scholarship prize in 2014. According to his LinkedIn profile, he volunteered at Lorien Health Systems in 2014. A Penn official confirmed to CBS News that Mangione graduated from the university in 2020.
Luigi Mangione earned a Master of Science in engineering with a concentration in computer and information science. He also has a Bachelor of Science in engineering with a computer science major and a mathematics minor.
Mangione appeared to have serious back discomfort. The backdrop image on Mangione’s X account depicts an X-ray of a spine with hardware in it, indicating recent surgery. However, it is not clear whether this is an X-ray of Mangione’s spine.
An orthopedist told CBS News that the imaging looked to reveal a hardware fusion, most likely for spondylolisthesis, a condition in which a vertebra falls out of position. Mangione discussed the issue on Reddit and other social media platforms.

Mangione, who authorities say traveled to Pittsburgh and then Altoona after leaving New York, was apprehended at a McDonald’s after a customer notified an employee, who called police. Officers questioned Mangione, who they said was acting suspiciously.

According to court filings, Altoona cops discovered Mangione sitting at a table in the back of the McDonald’s, wearing a blue medical mask and staring at a laptop with a backpack on the floor nearby.
When the authorities asked him to remove the mask, they recognized him from images provided to the media. Mangione was in possession of many false IDs as well as a US passport, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
The commissioner stated that one of the IDs matched the phony New Jersey ID used by the shooting suspect to check into a Manhattan hostel before the shooting. Officers discovered a gun and a suppressor that matched the weapon used in Thompson’s December 4 shooting, Tisch said.
Police claimed the gun found in his rucksack seemed to be a 3D-printed ghost gun, complete with a loaded Glock magazine containing six 9 mm full metal jacket rounds and a 3D-printed suppressor. Police claimed they seized clothing and a mask that matched those of the suspect in the case.
What the Luigi Mangione Trial Has Revealed So Far
On Monday evening, Luigi Mangione was arraigned with five charges in Pennsylvania: forgery, carrying weapons without a license, tampering with documents or identification, possessing criminal instruments, and providing fake identification to police authorities. Later that night, New York filed the murder charges.
Mangione was belligerent as he entered the Blair County Courthouse ahead of Tuesday’s sessions. He was shouting that what was happening to him was “an insult to the intelligence of the American people.” He sat at the defense table in the courtroom, mumbling and mouthing sentences quietly.

A three-page handwritten document that “speaks to both his motivation and mindset” was also discovered when authorities captured Mangione. According to NYPD sources, the notes constituted a claim of responsibility in which Mangione attempted to excuse his actions.
Mangione stated that the United States has the “most expensive healthcare system in the world” but also bemoaned that the country “ranks #42 in life expectancy.” Intelligence officials believe Luigi Mangione’s complaints about UnitedHealthcare and other health insurance firms were the motivation for the murder.
