In October 2024, “The Princess Diaries” star Anne Hathaway stated that the movie is imminent, with production scheduled to begin in 2025. “The Princess Diaries” follows Mia Thermopolis’s transformation from a typical teenager to a princess under the guidance of her royal grandmother.

Is There Going To Be a Third Princess Diaries Movie?
Months before Anne Hathaway’s October 2024 statement confirming the third installment, the actress stated her desire to return as Princess Mia. In April 2024, during an interview with Vanity Fair, Hathaway described “The Princess Diaries” as the movie that altered her life.
In 2023, Hathaway told PEOPLE that she was particularly pleased to witness the general interest in a third installment. She stated that while she understands the 20-year wait is frustrating, it is also, unfortunately, a common part of filmmaking.

“This is how long it takes to manufacture things… it is a process that demands patience,” the actress said. However, the wait is over, as Hathaway took to her Instagram to announce the official confirmation of the movie.
On October 5, 2024, she wrote in her Instagram post, “Miracles happen. Back to Genoa with Adeleblim, Disney, and somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues.” While no plot details have been released, it has been confirmed that Flora Greeson wrote the latest script for “The Princess Diaries 3.”
In 2016, Garry Marshall, the director of the first two movies, revealed that he was in contact with Hathaway, discussing possible storylines. Marshall revealed, “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple of weeks ago; it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan.”
However, things didn’t work out as Marshall passed away in July 2016, and Hathaway was pregnant at the time. Subsequently, in 2019, the actress revealed she was still working on the third movie with a completed script. Hathaway said, “We don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”

In 2023, Pine told Entertainment Tonight that he would return to his breakout role if he was ever asked to. “Yeah, I’m here! I’m here for it. Give me—give me a phone call or an email,” the actor said.
In May 2024, while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Pine said, “Princess Diaries 3, where is it? Have you been reading my diary? I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything about it.”

Which Cast Members Are Returning in Princess Diaries 3?
Undoubtedly, “The Princess Diaries” kick-started the careers of a number of its cast, with some becoming some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. With the official confirmation coming on October 5, 2024, Hathaway has been confirmed to reprise her role.
While the full cast list for the third movie is yet to be confirmed, some franchise actors, like Chris Pine, have revealed their intention to reprise their previous roles. Another actor is Sandra Oh, who stated her desire to reprise the role of Vice Principal Gupta.
In May 2024, when asked about the possibility, the “Grey’s Anatomy” star said, “Yeah, that would be hilarious. Are you kidding? Sure. Yeah.” In 2016, during an interview with InStyle, Mandy Moore stated that playing Lana in the first movie was a remarkable experience.
Subsequently, in 2022, during her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Moore said, “I kind of feel like my character was sort of the nemesis to Anne Hathaway’s character in the first film, and she was so mean, I feel like maybe there’s no place for her [in a third film].”
She continued, “I would love, love, love to join those ladies again, anytime, but I also understand if there’s no room for my awful character.” Additionally, in 2016, Heather Matarazzo, who plays Lilly Moscovitz, stated that she would most certainly return for a follow-up.
Is Julie Andrews in Princess Diaries 3?
Over the years, Julie Andrews’ stance on reprising her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi has varied, leaving her involvement in the next film uncertain. In 2020, Andrews stated that although she was tired, she was open to reprising her role for a third installment.
She also stated her excitement at the possibility of working and reuniting with Anne Hathaway again. Andrews said, “I think I would. I’m getting old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right time, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again.”

However, in 2024, she had a different opinion, stating that the year gap between movies was too long.
“It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ’til it’s dead,” Andrews said. Subsequently, the actress said, “I’d be very happy if we did do another one.”
