According to a court document, a UCLA student sued the school for racial discrimination, among other allegations. He has accused UCLA of restricting his access to the campus after mistaking him for an Israeli citizen. For the first time since he filed the lawsuit against the university, he is speaking out.
An African American and UCLA Christian student, Milagro Jones, gained national recognition after his encounter with pro-Palestinian activists. Subsequently, after the encounter, he sued UCLA, along with the protesters involved in the May 2024 encampment.
In the interview, Jones said that the encampment by the protesters was a violent one and antisemitic. He also claimed that he was a victim of the protests and that there were other victims.
He claimed that his long recording was the reason they smashed his phone, as it exposed what they were doing and they didn’t like it. According to the lawsuit, the encampment targeted him over his race, as he was mistaken for an Israeli agitator. Jones is African American.

The lawsuit stated that the issue of contention was that Jones was not who the protesters thought he was. It also added that he was simply a student who was denied access to spaces that were meant for everyone.
Jones said he was lied to, as he used to be pro-Palestinian, before his May 2024 encounter. However, he claimed that now he knows that the movement was all about hating Semitic people.

Jones said: “When I was introduced to the Free Palestine movement … we thought it was something that it wasn’t. It’s really about … wanting to get rid of Israel as a sovereign nation, wanting to get rid of America as a sovereign nation,” he said. “When that came to light, I understood that all I could understand was supporting my nation, America, and my ally Israel. At the end of the day, I do not support Hamas. I do not support terrorism.”
According to the court document, the lawsuit used phrases like “violent antisemites” and “Campus Terrorists” to describe the protesters. Additionally, it accuses the university of the inability to fully implement its policies and rules, which was why the encampment lasted as long as it did. As a result of the university not satisfying its duty of care, it was also an accomplice.

The lawsuit said that campus terrorists sought to create division through disruptive actions on campus, targeting Jewish individuals and those they viewed as agitators. In spring 2024, anti-Israel students illegally camped on campus, flouting UCLA rules and California laws, alleges the suit.
According to a press statement by the university, UCLA remains committed to supporting the safety and well-being of its entire community. They added that they would respond to the lawsuit at the appropriate time and with the right action.
