President Joe Biden made his way down to Florida, hoping to try to convince the state back toward the center and keep abortion rights at the forefront of the 2024 election discussion. With his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, in a New York criminal case, Biden used that opportunity to talk about this issue.
“In America today in 2024, women have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers because of Donald Trump,” Biden stated before a crowd of about 200 supporters in Tampa.
Florida has leaned red since Obama’s 2012 win, and this has become a challenge for Biden. Despite trailing in polls, his campaign will try to link Trump to Florida’s controversial abortion law.
“I think Florida is in play, nationally,” Biden remarked, emphasizing his campaign’s efforts. Last year, as DeSantis prepared for his presidential bid, he signed a bill which will not allow abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.

This move was seen as extreme by critics, but the reason was to get Evangelical voters in Iowa. Even Trump expressed doubts, He called it a “terrible mistake.”
Trump’s stance on leaving abortion laws to the states could backfire, especially with the recent Arizona and Florida rulings. The bringing back of the almost complete ban in Arizona and Florida’s impending law could challenge Trump’s position.
Biden criticized the six-week ban, sarcastically calling it “brilliant” and questioning its impact on women’s rights and privacy. However, Republican critics, including RNC Chairman Michael Whatley, labeled Biden’s abortion stance as radical and out of touch. Others asked him to focus on economic issues rather than reproductive rights.

“But that will not stop him from pitching it to Florida voters. Biden must have forgotten that thousands of Americans have fled from extremist Democrat policies to prosperous and pro-life states like Florida,” Whatley said. Other critics said Biden should focus on economic issues.
Despite the abortion restrictions, Florida will vote on an amendment protecting abortion rights this year. Biden rallied the crowd, urging them to add Florida to the list of states defending reproductive freedom.
A survey revealed significant support for the amendment, but Biden still faces a battle in Florida. With Trump holding a lead in polls, Biden’s campaign must work harder to get voters.
Biden also warned that “broader rights of privacy for everyone” such as protections for same sex marriage and birth control could be at risk after Roe was overturned, referencing the writings of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.

“When Florida’s ban takes effect, it will severely restrict reproductive health care access across the entire Southeastern United States, including neighboring battlegrounds of Georgia and North Carolina,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez wrote in a memo released Tuesday, adding: “Many women in the Southeast desperately in need of care will have to drive for a day or more to reach the closest clinic.” The Biden campaign is promising to keep abortion “front and center” in the election.
