ABC News president Kimberly Godwin knocked former President Donald Trump over his remarks about Black voters. Godwin called out Trump after he claimed Black people are more favorable towards him because of his 91 felony charges, saying the comments are “as racist as they come.”

Speaking to the Black Conservative Federation in Columbia, South Carolina, on Friday, February 23, 2024, Trump made a controversial remark. The former President said the court indicted him “a second and a third time and a fourth time.” Then, he added, “And a lot of people said that that’s why the Black people like me.”

Furthermore, Trump said Black people “have been hurt so badly and discriminated against.” Hence, he said they “viewed me as being discriminated against.” While the comments sounded perfect to Trump, they didn’t sit well with Godwin, who called him out.

“No matter one’s politics, the fact that a person running for President of the United States made these remarks, period, but also to a public crowd, and with so many black people present,” Godwin wrote in an email shared with multiple outlets.

“And that they stand with him is mind-blowing. Shocking. These remarks are as racist as they come.” According to reports, Godwin’s comments were part of an internal editorial discussion about coverage of the former President.

During his speech in South Carolina, Trump told the crowd the court indicted him for nothing. “For something that is nothing,” he said, about the dozens of criminal charges he faces. Also, he claimed that many said Black people like him for that because they have faced similar challenges.

Trump said, “It’s been pretty amazing, but maybe there’s something there,” hinting at a similarity between his criminal history and Black people. Godwin’s remarks came after widespread condemnation of Trump’s speech at the annual gala.

POLL — Should Donald J. Trump Be Allowed to Run for Office?

He faced backlash from Black leaders and civil rights activists in the following days. Trump also faced criticism from the White House and his rival in the Republican presidential primary, Nikki Haley.

“It’s disgusting,” Haley, who has also been a target of Trump’s racist remarks, said on Saturday, February 24, 2024. Similarly, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre called Trump’s statement “repugnant and divisive to traffic in racist stereotypes.”

“It is profane to compare the long, painful history of abuse and discrimination suffered by Black Americans,” Jean-Pierre said. “To something totally different for self-serving purposes.”

According to reports, Trump also said at the gala, “These lights are so bright in my eyes that I can’t see too many people out there.” “I can only see the Black ones; I can’t see any white ones,” he added. “That’s how far I’ve come. That’s a long way.”

The front-runner for the GOP nomination, Trump has a history of making insensitive comments about Black Americans, women, and immigrants. The former President is also facing a total of 91 criminal charges in four separate cases.

Despite his multiple criminal charges, Trump is giving Haley a run for her money in the GOP primary race. He resoundingly defeated Haley in her home state of South Carolina and continued the winning streak in the Michigan primary.

However, Haley has insisted on remaining in the primary race until at least Super Tuesday, March 5, 2024.
