As the possibility of a Joe Biden-Donald Trump rematch in this year’s presidential election grows, a poll suggests that more Americans are viewing Trump’s term in office with nostalgia.

According to the NBC News poll, forty percent of respondents stated that Trump’s presidency was better than expected. About one-third of those surveyed, or 31 percent, indicated that Trump’s time in office was about as they had expected. Meanwhile, 29 percent expressed that Trump’s presidency was worse than anticipated.

The poll revealed that voters were more critical of Biden’s presidency. Only 14 percent stated that Biden had performed better than expected, while 42 percent expressed that he had done worse.

Additionally, 44 percent indicated that he had performed as well as expected. The poll, which surveyed 1,000 registered voters, was conducted between January 26 and 30.

Trump has emerged victorious in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada as he advances toward securing the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Despite facing various legal challenges, including 91 charges across four distinct criminal cases, Republicans are increasingly rallying behind him.

His aim is to secure a substantial delegate haul during the Super Tuesday contests on March 5, thereby advancing his position as the party’s nominee. The evaluation of Trump’s presidency has improved compared to when NBC News posed the same question in August 2018.

At that time, only 29 percent of respondents believed the Trump administration was surpassing their expectations, while 43 percent stated it was performing as they had anticipated. Meanwhile, 27 percent expressed that it was falling short of their expectations.

The latest poll indicated that Republicans tend to view the Trump presidency more favorably, with 80 percent of Republican voters believing it exceeded their expectations. In comparison, only 6 percent felt it fell short. Approximately 24 percent stated that it met their expectations.

Democrats, however, were more divided in their assessment of Biden’s presidency. Approximately half, or 52 percent of Democrats, indicated his administration aligned with their expectations. Meanwhile, 30 percent felt it exceeded their expectations, and 18 percent believed it fell short.

When asked about their sentiments regarding Biden and Trump, many respondents cited the economy and border security as significant factors. These issues are expected to remain at the forefront of discussions leading up to the 2024 election.

“Certainly, some of the nostalgia comes from Americans remembering a time when they could go to the grocery store and not feel like they had to take out a second mortgage to pay for a carton of milk,” stated Thomas Gift, an associate professor of political science and director of the Centre on U.S. Politics at University College London in the U.K., in an interview with Newsweek.

“But more generally, there’s a tendency for citizens to view the past with more fondness and for the esteem of presidents to increase when they’re not in the political arena,” Gift remarked.

He noted that public opinion on former President George W. Bush has significantly transformed since his time in the White House. “Today, his approval numbers are almost twice what they were when he served as commander-in-chief,” Gift stated.
