The View’s Whoopi Goldberg is probably one of the most vocal figures of our time. She has very strong opinions and is not afraid to voice them out on ABC’s The View. In a recent airing, she spoke on racism and how the two Republican presidential candidates are trying to “whitewash” racism.
This came after Nikki Haley told Fox News in an interview that the U.S. “has never been a racist country.” Her opponent and current governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, supported her claim as well.
Therefore, Goldberg felt offended by this version of American history that these candidates are promoting. She said, “I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to just admit racism is and has been a part of U.S. history.”
“They lynched Black folks. Black folks didn’t climb up in the trees and lynch themselves. People were angry and came and burned them out. Emmett Till did not do that to himself. That was done to him because somebody was angry he overstepped, in their mind, what he was supposed to do as a Black person.”

She concluded her argument by saying, “You can’t tell me it hasn’t existed, doesn’t exist. Yeah, we are trying to get it better. But stop trying to whitewash it.” Clearly, Goldberg was quite upset about this issue.
This is understandable as a black woman who had to fight against racism all her life. Throughout her career, she had a lot of missed opportunities thanks to the color of her skin. Therefore, for prominent political figures to come out and deny its existence is quite wrong.
Goldberg’s co-host Ana Navarro agreed with her take on this matter. She also highlighted the fact that Haley is a person of color. Her parents were born in India, even though she is an American citizen.

Therefore, to deny the existence of racism as a person of color is surprising. Navarro said, “It strikes us quite differently when you hear a woman of color deny racism in American history.”
“She’s running in a party where being a woman of color, talking about race, is considered being a whiny, ingrate ungrateful to the United States for the opportunity it’s given us and playing identity politics.”
Another host, Joy Behar, also had some things to say about the matter. She is a long critic of Haley and DeSantis, so their statements did not surprise her. She argued that Haley’s remarks show how insidious the race for the White House has become.

Behar said, “I mean, to say it’s not a racist country just shows you how craven she has become to appeal to her base.” Undoubtedly, a lot of American leaders are trying to reduce racism in the country.
However, claiming the country is not racist when this is the reality of people of color is very dishonest. The better route would be talking about ways to eradicate racism in America completely.
