Gilbert Gottfried’s Career as a Comedian
Gilbert is best known for his work in films like “Problem Child” and “A Million Ways to Die in the West.” But he has long been considered one of America’s most controversial comedians.
He is famous for his squinty-eyed delivery and raspy voice. He was a man who flinched from nothing and even made jokes about 9/11, which many felt was too soon after the tragedy.
However, Lily Aster Gottfried’s father has responded to those criticisms differently. According to Vulture, he once said: “When I make a joke about September 11 or the Japanese tsunami, what’s funny is that it shocks the audience. They are responding to the fact that it’s tragic, and you’re acknowledging it.”
Describing Gilbert’s work, a statement from his friend and podcast co-host Frank Santopadre read, “Gilbert’s brand of humor was bold, shocking and frequently offensive, but the man behind the jokes was anything but.
Those who loved him were fortunate enough to share his orbit. They knew a person who was sweet, sensitive, surprisingly shy, and filled with a childlike sense of playfulness and wonder. He’ll be dearly missed by family, friends, fans, and comedy lovers worldwide. To quote Gilbert himself, ‘Too soon!'”

She was responsible for Gilbert joining the TBS Tournament of Laughs by helping him compose some hilarious skits. Lily even helped her father get on TikTok, showing him how to make waves on the platform.
Gilbert once said, “My daughter, she’s on TikTok. So, she got me on TikTok. I have no idea what it is. I’m like talking to somebody’s grandmother about TikTok, and she’ll say, ‘I want you to do this little dance step,’ which I can never do. So, I was already making stuff with her, and [the video] was like the next step.”
Lily Aster Gottfried was impacted by her dad’s death, but she had her family to rely on. His death inspired her to make a documentary short about his hidden talent in 2022.
