Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most famous and talented actors. Not only does he mostly play a funny and loveable character in movies the actor is also well-loved by his colleagues.

One of his earliest and most famous Hollywood romances happened to be his relationship with 7-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, actress, and fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette.

Reynolds and Morissette reportedly met in 2002 at the birthday party of fellow Canadian Drew Barrymore. At the time, Reynolds was still an upcoming actor, and that year, he had starred in the movie “Van Wilder.”
Morissette, on the other hand, was already an established star. Her 1995 album “Jagged Little Pill” made her revered in the entertainment industry. However, the two undoubtedly clicked at the party because it wasn’t long after they started dating.
The couple always had wonderful things to say about one another during their relationship. Morissette once told “People Magazine” that she felt loved by Reynolds. She also said the actor is like her “soul brother,” except she wanted to jump his bones in their case.

In 2004 after two years of dating, Morissette and Reyolds became engaged. The Hollywood couple looked destined for the altar, and fans excitedly waited for the eventual day, but sadly, that day never arrived.
After an almost three-year engagement, Morissette and Reynolds announced their separation. The news of their split was a shock to everyone because the pair looked almost inseparable throughout their relationship.
In the statement that their representatives shared, the former couple declared that they remain close friends and have the utmost love and admiration for each other. However, they also requested that their privacy be respected because this was a personal matter.
Why Did They Break Up?
Although, at the time, it was unclear precisely what caused the split, however, years later. In 2018 the singer released her album “Flavors of Entanglement. The lyrics of the track “Torch” also slightly addressed her heartbreak.
Speaking to Access about the song, Morissette declared the lyrics, which contained sentences like “I miss your smell and your style and your pure abiding way,” was about her grief.
Morissette also touched on her relationship with Reynolds during an interview with Entertainment weekly. The musician alluded that the high-profile aspect of their relationship contributed to how it ended. Morissette also declared she would be avoiding public romance in the future.
During her interview with the L.A. Times, she explained further, telling the interviewer that the high-profile aspect of her relationship with Renolds was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Morisette disclosed:
“I was a full-blown love addict, so it was like, ‘I can’t keep doing this, my body can’t take it for someone who is a love addict, [breakups are] debilitating. I’ve been on a constant journey toward finally surrendering and hitting rock bottom, which I’ve been avoiding my whole life.
She revealed it was a massive, critical juncture for her, and everything broke. However, it was both a unique and horrifying time for her.
Also, at the time of their breakup, there were some rumors Reynolds might have cheated on Morissette. However, months after their separation, the actor publicly announced his relationship with actress Scarlett Johansson.
How quickly Reynolds looked to have moved on surprised most people, and this led to speculations the actor might have been steeping out on his ex-partner.
Alanis Morissette and Ryan Reynolds Have Both Moved On
Shortly after his separation from Morissette, Reynolds began a relationship with actress Scarlett Johansson. The pair dated for years before they eventually tied the knot in 2008.
However, their marriage only lasted two years, and they divorced in 2010. The pair released a statement that said:
“After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love, and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. So while privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”
Just like his first separation, Reynolds quickly moved on from his divorce from Johansson. He hooked up with actress Blake Lively in 2010 when his marriage ended.
The pair met on the set of the movie “Green Lantern” and quickly became inseparable. Their relationship took a significant step in 2012 when they exchanged marital vows. They have since become parents to three kids.
In comparison to Reynolds, Morisette has had a less adventurous romantic journey. In 2010 she married American rapper Souleye whose real name is Mario Treadway. They have since added sons Ever Imre, Winter, and daughter Onyx Solace to their family.
