Before Heman Bekele came along, many would think it a wild goose chase to ask a 14-year-old to cure cancer. However, young Bekele is breaking bounds by creating a skincare soap that cures cancer.
In recognition of his innovative contribution to science, Bekele now holds the title of America’s Top Young Scientist. Researching Bekele’s background will help us understand how he could manage to achieve such a feat at a young age.
Heman Bekele is a high school freshman at Woodson High School, Annandale, Virginia. While he is breaking ground in the realms of medicine, his actual passion is computer programming and electrical engineering. After extensive self-training, Bekele can code in Javascript, Python, and C.
Young Bekele continually affirms during interviews that his academic goal is to become an electrical engineer. He wants to exercise this knowledge in the design of innovative electrical systems. However, people know the young high-schooler better for his cancer cure.

Bekele’s interest in cancer treatment is a product of a stunning discovery about the lack of basic health care in some parts of the world. He learned that some developing countries did not have access to cancer treatment facilities. In the few instances where the facilities are available, they are often too expensive for locals to access.
So, in most cases, cancer patients in impoverished countries would usually die from complications of the disease. More often than not, patients in this category may survive if they have access to appropriate treatment.
Of course, young Bekele did not have the financial capability of setting up cancer treatment facilities for poverty-stricken countries. However, he decided to be a solution himself. First, he did an extensive personal study of skin cancer and dendritic cells.

After his self-study and proposal, Bekele reached out to the University of Virginia for research assistance. He then proposed a mixture that could break down cancerous skin cells and encourage the growth of healthy skin in its place. Bekele’s proposed mixture contains three active ingredients: glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and tretinoin.
So, using these three chemicals, Bekele developed a grand invention. The young chap made what he calls a Skin Cancer-treating Soap (SCTS). According to Bekele, the SCTS can cure skin cancer upon application to the skin for a few days.
Bekele’s SCTS made the first public debut at Discovery Education’s 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This event was a science contest held in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a $25,000 prize. Bekele won, leading to his being crowned America’s Top Young Scientist.

Bekele said he was surprised to have won the science prize ahead of nine other contestants. However, he soon made up his mind on how to spend the prize money. Not long after the contest, the whiz kid continued researching SCTS to make it market-worthy.
Bekele has also applied for a conditional patent for his invention. So, all the expenses that come with these, and an FDA certification for the new product, will be funded with the prize money.
We must admit that Bekele is a natural innovator and game-changer. Who knows what this young scientist will make in the future?
