The Met Gala Event is one of the most talked-about events of the year, and celebrities go all out to showcase the best of fashion. However, sometimes their looks could border on controversial.
Met Gala 2021 is here, and as always, celebrities have been popping out their creative looks as they arrive. This is in no way different from past Met Galas, where stars strut their stuff at the finest of creativity.
However, stars in the coast have either raised the brows of a group or have been out-rightly controversial with their fashion choices. In honor of the colorful fundraising ball, here are ten looks from celebs that have caused quite a stir in the past.
Jaden Smith
The music star turned heads, mostly not for his styling choice but for the accessory he added. Smith attended the 2017 Met Gala ball wearing an all-black Louis Vuitton look, and he carried a chunky amount of his gold lock that has been cut off, as an accessory.
Kylie Jenner
A year before Smith’s look caught attention; Kylie Jenner walked the colorful stairs of the Met Gala in a floor-length custom metallic Balmain dress. Jenner’s iconic look received approval from fans and fashion lovers. However, she would later share that the dress made her feel uncomfortable and bruised her body so badly.
Sarah Jessica Parker
The 2015 Met Gala theme had been China: Through the Looking Glass, but it seems Parker worked overtime at getting a desirable costume. The “Sex and the City” actress rocked a fiery red headpiece, and she was accused of cultural appropriation.
Hailey Bieber
At the 2019 Met ball, Hailey Bieber stunned in a pink Vera Wang outfit that left a huge cutout on her back. The cutout reached below her backside, revealing a custom Vera Wang G-string. However, many called it out as they drew plagiarism allegations, noting that it looked like Tom Ford’s 1997 collection.
Kanye West
The music mogul’s 2019 Met Gala remains unforgettable even though it was unremarkable. West stepped out in an all-black outfit spotting a $43 Dickies jacket. This was in stark contrast to his wife, Kim Kardashian’s headlining Wet look. Many fans felt he chose to dress like that so Kardashian could have the spotlight.
Kim Kardashian
The beauty mogul attended her first Met Gala in 2013, but it didn’t end well. The then-pregnant reality icon rocked a floral Givenchy dress with a train and matching shoes. The online backlash was so unbearable that Kardashian left the event in tears.
Priyanka Chopra
The Hollywood actress was the subject for memes at the 2017 Met Ball after she stepped out in a Ralph Lauren design that merged a trench coat and a ball gown. Internet users nicknamed her “Inspector Gadget” for her look.
Madonna
The iconic singer is known for controversies and being fodder for tabloids, and her 2016 Gala glam was no exception. Madonna stepped out in a black lace outfit with mesh details all over. She also exposed her backside, causing the internet to go berserk.
Karolìna KurKová
Kurkova’s Chinese-inspired Met ball glam was designed by Tommy Hilfiger, and it was a skimpy dress made out of red satin channeling the qipao. However, Fashionista editor Fawnia Soo Hoo shared that Kurkova’s ensemble sexualized the traditional cheongsam.
Rihanna
The Met Gala headliner’s famous flowing yellow Grupo Pei ensemble was met with approval and a nod from fashion lovers. Rihanna stepped onto the red carpet, rocking the large outfit with fur finishings. However, she came under fire when fur anti-fur activities found it irresponsible that she promoted fur use.
Again in 2018, Rihanna caused quite a stir for her Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and Catholic Imagination look. She glammed up in a Maison Margiela outfit inspired by the papal headdress and a studded dress. The outfit sparked criticism from Catholics who tagged it “offensive.”
