In a recent study, Smart Asset discovered a peculiar trend in the migration of Gen Zs. Using public data from 2022 made available by the US Census Bureau, the Study pointed out the cities that the average Gen Z will likely move to.
The Smart Asset study identifies job opportunities, college friendliness, and lower living costs as motivating factors for Gen Zs. From the Study, we have a list of the top destinations for young folks in 2024, starting from the highest. These projections apply to people between the ages of 18 and 24, and the Study cuts across 268 states in the US.
Of all US Cities, Ann Arbor, Michigan, has the highest ratio of Gen Zs in its population. In 2022, some 31,400 Gen Zers moved to Ann Arbor, making them 36% of the city’s population.
That is a whopping 12% increase. A possible reason for this influx is probably due to all the right conditions that make Ann Arbor a safe haven for Gen Zs. Ann Arbor is a popular university community that was made popular largely by the University of Michigan.

In Provo, Utah, Gen Zers were roughly 24% of the population in 2021. Fast forward to 2022, the Smart Asset study discovered that they have jumped to 42% of the Provo population. This change was due to the 27,522 newcomers that fall into the Gen Z category.
In Boulder, Colorado, 25,027 Gen Zers moved into the city. Comparing the current Census figures to those of the preceding year, the Gen Zs living in Boulder have increased from 23% to 33%.
Next in popularity among Gen Zs is College Station, Texas. As the name implies, College Station is home to Texas A&M University. The Study reveals that College Station has gained 27,248 more Gen Zers. This figure further takes the population of young adults from 22% to 40% of the total population.

Next on the roll is the city of Athens, which lies in the Northeastern portion of Georgia. Athens is home to the University of Georgia, the foremost public college in the state. So, naturally, the city attracts a large student population.
Indeed, many even proceed to settle back in the welcoming city of Athens after graduation. According to the Smart Asset study, the Gen Z population of Athens has increased by 22,212. They were just 17.5% of the population but are presently about 28.1%.

It won’t be surprising if a Baby Boomer feels out of place in the next city we are looking at. That’s because Tallahassee has a thriving student population. Tallahassee, Florida, is home to Tallahassee Community College, Florida State University, and Florida A&M University. The latest US Census reveals that the city’s population of Gen Zs has added an extra 34,571. That’s a 17.4% increase.
Moreover, Berkeley is home to the prestigious University of California. In recent census figures, the number of Gen Zs that recently moved into the city now makes up 15.8% of Berkeley’s total population.
