Survey Shows Kamala Harris Continues To Struggle With Approval Ratings Outside the Democratic Tent

Over the past months, the White House has rehabilitated Vice President Kamala Harris’ image ahead of the Presidential elections. However, despite the efforts, Kamala Harris continues struggling to win over Americans outside the Democratic tent.

According to an exclusive USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, Americans aren’t pleased with her performance in office. The national survey found that 52% of registered voters disapproved of her job performance as President Joe Biden’s vice president.

However, about 36% approve of how she’s handling the role, trailing Biden’s equally low 41% approval rating. The numbers are pretty much the same when asked to weigh Harris’ popularity; nearly 38% of Americans have a favorable view of Harris.

Nevertheless, she lags behind Biden, whom 41% of registered voters view favorably. On the other hand, 40% of respondents in the poll view Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, favorably. With the general election around the corner, experts warn that Harris’ popularity might continue to wither.

Democratic allies warned about the need to boost Kamala Harris and clap back against Republican attacks over a year ago. At a time when the age of both presumptive presidential nominees is at the forefront, experts warn questions about Harris will only get louder.

“Usually, it’s a secondary and muted discussion about vice presidents,” said David Paleologos, Suffolk University Political Research Center Director. “This time, it’s going to be almost a parallel and loud discussion in comparison.” While Kamala Harris’ future outside the Democratic tent remains unknown, some voters think she’s a good fit.

“I think she’s very smart. I think she’s confident,” said 49-year-old Democrat Alissa Morris, who plans to vote for Biden. “She knows what she’s doing. I think her role does not take full advantage of her abilities.” However, Republican Rose Marie Livings disagrees.

POLL — Should Donald J. Trump Be Allowed to Run for Office?

She pointed to Biden tapping Harris to lead efforts to address the US-Mexico border amid the ongoing migrant crisis. “She’s pathetic,” Livings, 87, a retired public school administrator in Vero Beach, Florida, said in an interview. “She was supposed to deal with the border.”

Like Livings, several respondents in the new survey don’t think Kamala Harris is qualified for the position. Harris’ poll numbers have long been a sore spot for the White House and Democrats. Hence, they say the public unfairly judges her as the first Black and South Asian woman to hold the office.

The vice president has faced claims that she failed to define an influential role in the administration. Some of her assignments have included solving Central American migration along the southern border. However, none of these problems seem to have a solution in sight.

While 92% of Republican voters said Kamala Harris is not qualified, other important voting blocs also have doubts. 56% of independents, 37% of African Americans, and 48% of Hispanic voters also agree she is unfit. “I don’t even know why they selected her,” said Sandra Luby, 75, a former special ed teacher from Ohio.

“Is she articulate? Yeah. She’s relatively articulate, and so I suppose that counts,” Luby added. “But we’re at that point where that’s the only thing that counts? That’s sad.” Fortunately, the poll isn’t all doom and gloom for Harris, who is immensely popular among fellow Democrats.
