Run Hua Kuang was asleep at his East Oakland, California, home on Monday, August 5, 2024, when tragedy came knocking on his door. According to a GoFundMe page set up by Kuang’s sister, Jasmine Kuang, a “stray bullet came flying through a wall, penetrated the headboard, and went straight through his head and out his left eye.”

Run Hua Kuang had just gotten home from his delivery truck driving job and went to bed to nap. The father of two reportedly resides with his parents, his wife of seven years, and their kids, ages three and seven months.

While authorities haven’t reported any other injuries from the residence, here’s everything we know:

Where Did the Stray Bullet Come From?

According to reports, it’s unclear what precipitated the shooting. Information on a possible suspect has not been made public, and officials have not taken anyone into custody thus far. However, the GoFundMe page claims that the shooting has left Kuang’s “entire family traumatized and in deep distress.”

What Happened After the Shooting?

Following the shooting, authorities rushed the victim to the hospital. Hua Kuang is reportedly in the intensive care unit (ICU) on life support, “fighting for his life,” following a seven-hour surgery.

In addition to “providing support and services,” the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department communicated with his family during the investigation. However, the GoFundMe page claims that Hua Kuang was his family’s only provider before moving to the United States in 2005 from Taishan, China.

A GoFundMe Was Created To Help

To date, the GoFundMe campaign created for Hua Kuang has received over 1,900 donations and raised over $141,000 of its $200,000 target. “Our family is now severely financially burdened as a result of this catastrophe,” the campaign reads.

The campaign states, “Also, Hua is the only person who can manage household duties and communications while speaking only a limited amount of English, making his absence even more difficult.”
