Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the United States Secret Service, has resigned amid overwhelming requests from politicians to do so. This following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, according to three sources.
Cheatle stated in her resignation letter, which was obtained from a senior official who received it, that “scrutiny over the last week has been intense and will continue to remain as our operational tempo increases.” She stated that she accepts “full responsibility for the security lapse.”
President Biden’s Remarks
“In light of recent events, it is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as your director,” stated Cheatle, the agency’s leader since September 2022. It is unknown when her last workday will be.
In a statement, President Joe Biden congratulated Cheatle for her work and stated that he will pick her replacement to lead the Secret work “soon.” Following the attempted assassination of Trump, Biden authorized an independent investigation into what occurred and stated on Tuesday that he looks forward to reviewing the findings. “We all know what happened that day can never happen again,” Biden told reporters.

Donald Trump’s Reaction To Kimberly Cheatle’s Resignation
In reaction to her resignation, Trump said on Truth Social: “The Biden/Harris Administration did not adequately protect me, and I was forced to take a bullet for Democracy.” It was a great honor for me to do so!” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., said Tuesday that Cheatle “instilled no confidence.”
This happened when she was questioned Monday by irate senators from both parties who were frustrated with the Secret Service’s failure to protect Trump. “I’m not going to get into specifics of the day,” Cheatle said, citing the current inquiry. “There was a plan in place to provide overwatch, and we are still looking into responsibilities.”
Legislators Were Fed Up With Kimberly Cheatle
Both Democratic and Republican committee members said she ought to step down due to her “incompetence” along with “lame excuses.” “You’re full of s— today!” Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., chastised Cheatle for avoiding questions and being “completely dishonest” about her participation with the committee.
Her comments did not satisfy House Oversight Committee leaders, who held the hearing on Monday and subpoenaed her. “Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures,” Comer and ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., wrote to Cheatle in a letter sent jointly hours shortly after the committee hearing.

Calls For Resignation
The two members stated that the committee and the public at large “demand serious institutional accountability and transparency, which you are not providing,” especially during a presidential election year.
“We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people,” their letter reads.
Kimberly Cheatle Needed “to go”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and numerous other senior Republicans, including House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Barrasso, R-Wyo., have also called for Cheatle’s resignation. Prior to her resignation on Tuesday, numerous Republican lawmakers stated that they intended to bring impeachment proceedings against Cheatle. “She needs to go,” Barrasso told NBC News.
She said the agency was reviewing the event and didn’t have all of the details. However, Cheatle stated that there was a “very short” gap between the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, being identified as possibly questionable and beginning to open fire from an elevated position during the July 13 event.

Crooks Was Spotted Earlier
Two sources acquainted with the proceedings stated that the time frame was 62 minutes. This was following a Senate briefing on the attempted assassination on Wednesday. According to accounts, Secret Service agents spotted Crooks on a rooftop 10 minutes. This prior to when Trump ascended the stage, and he opened fire 20 minutes later.
Trump claims he was shot in the top part of his right ear. Corey Comperatore, a former fire official, was killed in the shooting. Two more were hurt and hospitalized, but their conditions have improved.
