Missouri prosecutors revealed on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, that they have charged two adults with murder in connection to the mass shooting that killed one and left 22 others injured. The deadly shooting occurred during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII victory rally.
The two men face murder and other felony charges in connection with gunfire outside of Union Station. They charged Lyndell Mays, of Raytown, Missouri, and Dominic Miller, of Kansas City, Missouri, with second-degree murder. In addition, prosecutors charged them with two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.
“We seek to hold every shooter accountable for their actions on that day,” Jean Peters Baker, Jackson County Prosecutor, said. “Every single one.” Baker also noted that they plan to charge more people from the rally regarding the incident. According to reporters, authorities are holding the two men on $1 million bail.
According to court documents, the two men were strangers. However, they pulled out guns and began firing within seconds of starting an argument. Both men shot each other and have been in the hospital since the shooting, Baker said during a news conference.

According to reports, the argument began when two groups grew agitated that people in other groups were staring at them. Furthermore, police say surveillance video shows Mays and someone with him aggressively approaching the other group.
Hence, prosecutors believe Mays was in a verbal argument with another person with whom he had no connection. The argument escalated, and Mays drew a handgun. “Mays pulled his handgun first,” Barker said. Also, the video showed Mays was the first to begin shooting despite being surrounded by crowds of people, including children.
While speaking to the detectives, Mays stated that “he hesitated shooting because he knew there were kids there.” He told investigators he began firing after someone in the other group said, “I’m going to get you,” which he took to mean they would try to kill him.

According to the affidavit, Mays said he chose a random person from the other group to shoot at. On the other hand, Miller initially told investigators that he and his friends started running after hearing gunfire.
In addition, according to a court affidavit, he claimed he got shot in the back. However, when investigators told him they had video of him shooting someone in Mays’ group, Miller admitted.
He admitted to firing four to five shots. According to police, a bullet from Miller’s gun killed Lisa Lopez-Galvan. Lopez-Galvan, a local radio disc jockey and mother of two children, who died from her injuries, was in a nearby crowd of people watching the Chiefs rally.

Since both men are still recovering from gunshot wounds, authorities will take them into custody once the hospital discharges them. According to reports, the shooters shot 23 people, and nearly half were under 16. Lopez-Galvan was the only fatality.
After prosecutors announced the charges, Lopez-Galvan’s family released a statement. “It is reassuring for our family and the entire community to know,” the family stated. “That this joint team effort has resulted in the identification of the suspects involved.”
Authorities did not release the ages of either man. However, court records show Mays is in his early 20s, and Miller is 18 or 19. Also, the new charges come after officials detained two juveniles on gun-related and resisting arrest charges.
