Police found a 20-year-old Alabama woman dead almost a day after she told her family someone was holding her hostage. The Birmingham Police Department shared on Facebook on Monday, February 26, 2024, that officers responded to a call at 2:19 a.m. local time.
A passerby reportedly called the police after discovering the body on the side of the road at 17th Street Southwest and Laurel Avenue. The passerby claimed the body was suffering from a gunshot wound. However, the police department has since identified the victim as Mahogany Jackson, according to a release from Sergeant LaQuitta Wade.
“When officers arrived on the scene,” the police department said. “They observed the victim lying unresponsive on the side of the road, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.” Before the discovery, police revealed on Sunday, February 25, that Jackson’s family reported her missing earlier in the day.
The family said they had not seen or heard from her since she texted a family member. Jackson’s mother, Gail Maddox, revealed the details of the incident while speaking to reporters. Maddox said she was going to pick up her family from the airport when her other daughter called her.

She said her other daughter told her on the call that she received a disturbing text from Jackson. Then, Maddox said she saw missed calls through Facebook Messenger at 7:46 a.m. local time. In addition, Maddox claimed Jackson asked her to call the police. Afterward, the family and the Birmingham Police went to the site of Jackson’s location in the messages. However, a woman who claimed Jackson knew her told police that Jackson left at 2 a.m., per Al.com.

“I know that’s not true because she sent that message and her location at 7:46 a.m.,” Maddox said. “Between then and now, I don’t know what happened.” Following the gruesome discovery, the county police began investigating the incident. In a press release on Wednesday, February 28, Birmingham Police announced the arrest of seven suspects.
The suspects arrested include four men and three women in connection to Jackson’s death. According to the release, they all face multiple charges, including capital murder, felony murder, first-degree sodomy, and first-degree kidnapping. “I feel it in my stomach,” Maddox said while speaking to news outlets. “My daughter would never say call the police, but she was afraid, and that’s why she asked us to.” Although the Birmingham Police Department has suspects in custody, the investigation is ongoing.
Hence, they encourage those with information about the case to call the department directly.
