Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City, has imposed a curfew on migrant shelters across the city. According to the new rules, migrants have to remain at their sites between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

This new rule comes from several complaints and concerns over the past few weeks. Some residents complained that migrants have been begging outside their homes. Others are begging for food, while some are begging for money and clothes.

Some migrants also used their children for panhandling, trying to appeal to the parental side of families. This made the residents uncomfortable, and many of them reported it. Some people also complained that they did not feel safe having migrants in varying numbers on their lawns at odd hours of the day.

Paul King, the president of the Property Owner’s Association in the affected Belle Harbor neighborhood, spoke to ABC News about the situation. “Some of it is from people coming up on their porches, using their kids as props, aggressively panhandling, people essentially even coming in the house,” he said.

Another reason why the mayor implemented this law is because of the increased violence in the city. There was also a fatal stabbing at a site on Randall’s Island some weeks ago. Due to several reasons, these migrants are not always in the best state of mind.

Therefore, it is easy for matters to get out of hand and resort to violence. Adams increased the security at all the shelter houses to reduce the occurrence of serious incidents.

For this new rule, officials will only allow those with pre-approval to leave the shelters after 11 p.m. If they catch anyone breaking the rules, they would get stern warnings. Anyone who violates the rules three times in one month may be kicked out of the shelter.

The mayor implemented this rule in four different sites. They are the 35th Avenue Astoria Center, the Lincoln Manhattan Center, the JFK Center, and the Stockton Center in Brooklyn. These sites are also known as respite centers, and they house about 1,900 migrants.

NYC council member Joanna Ariola brought up the idea of this curfew in a meeting. Reports also say the city’s homeless shelter population is subject to a similar rule. Therefore, this rule aims to protect both the migrants and the residents of the town. According to a New York City spokesperson, the rule will also lead to more efficient bed management.

“New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both migrants in our care and longtime New Yorkers who live in the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage,” the spokesperson said.

Undoubtedly, New York City is one of the most affected areas by the immigration influx. As a sanctuary city, it continues to welcome thousands of migrants even though it is almost at full capacity already.
