The mother of former child actor Jake Lloyd, renowned for his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker in “Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace,” has opened up about her son’s ongoing battle with mental illness.

At just ten years old, Lloyd captivated audiences worldwide with his role in the iconic movie released 1999 alongside stars like Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor. However, behind the scenes, Lloyd has grappled with paranoid schizophrenia, a diagnosis that has profoundly impacted his life since his Star Wars days.

Jake Lloyd, now 35, has largely retreated from the public eye since his early acting days, focusing instead on navigating the complexities of his mental health.

His mother, Lisa, has been a staunch advocate for her son, shedding light on his struggles and emphasizing that his involvement in the Star Wars franchise was unrelated to his condition. According to Lisa, Jake’s battle with mental illness was inevitable, given his family history of the condition on his father’s side.

The journey with mental health challenges began for Jake during his high school years, when he started exhibiting signs of confusion and disorientation, often questioning the nature of reality. Lisa recalls Jake’s difficulty in articulating his experiences, leaving her at a loss for words.

Despite his early success in acting, Jake’s childhood was relatively ordinary, with Lisa ensuring he had a balanced lifestyle away from the spotlight, engaging in typical childhood activities like riding bikes and playing with friends.

Jake’s transition to adulthood was marked by significant struggles with his mental health. Despite his aspirations to pursue an education at Columbia College Chicago after high school, Jake’s battle with bipolar disorder and subsequent diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia disrupted his academic pursuits.

Reports of hallucinations, paranoia, and erratic behavior became increasingly common, leading to challenges in maintaining stability. In 2015, matters took a distressing turn when Jake was arrested following a tumultuous solo trip from Florida to Canada, culminating in a police chase and car crash.

Lisa recounts the harrowing ordeal of trying to secure proper care for her son, only to face a lack of available psychiatric beds, resulting in Jake’s confinement in prison for ten months. Tragically, the family also endured the loss of Jake’s sister, Madison, in 2018, further compounding their challenges.

Despite the setbacks, there have been glimmers of hope in Jake’s journey. Following a recent “full-blown psychotic break,” Jake received intensive psychiatric care and is currently undergoing rehabilitation to manage his condition.
