Leading up to the stipulated time for the just-concluded VMAs, the award categories were released alongside V.M.A. plans. And for the after-award show updates, the names of winners have also been updated.
The prestigious MTV VMAs has come and gone! In all, fans got to see the new generation artists either make their debut stage performances or further seal their career milestones as performers.
Amid the fashionable displays and colorful stage performances, many new artists and older showrunners carted home awards. Here is a look through the nominations and the winners in each category.

Before the main event, the organizers released a list containing the categories and artists nominated. The VMAs categories came different by making sure it was gender-neutral.
Cardi B’s “W.A.P.” ft. Megan Thee Stallion, DJ Khaled’s Popstar, Lil Nas X’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name,” and Ed Sheeran’s Bad Habit, among others, made it to the Video of the Year Category.
Lil Nas X was announced as the winner of the category. Justin Beiber emerged as the artist of the year, having been nominated alongside Doja Cat, Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, and others.
The other categories include Song of The Year, which Olivia Rodrigo won. She made quite an impression, carting away more awards from two categories, including Best New Artist and Push Performance of the year.
Doja Cat and S.Z.A. won Best Collaboration for their song, “Kiss Me More,” Bieber aced his second award with Best Pop for “Peaches,” and Best Hip-Hop went to Travis Scott for M.I.A.

Best R&B went to Bruno Mars, Anderson Paak, and Silk Sonic for “Leave The Door Open.” B.T.S. won the Best K-pop category, Billie Eilish and Rosalia won Best Latin for “Lo Vas A Olvidar,” and Best Alternative went to M.G.K. and Blackbear for “My Ex’s Best GFriend.”
Video For Good went to Billie Eilish, B.T.S. won Group of The Year, and Song of The Summer, Lil Nas X won Best Direction. Doja Cat and Saweetie “Best Friend” won Best Art Direction.
Harry Styles won in the Best Choreography category while Beyonce featuring Wizkid, Blue Ivy, and SAINt J.H.N. aced the Best Cinematography award. Best Editing went to “Leave The Door Open,” and Best Visual Effect was awarded to “Montero.”
Details of the MTV VMAs Show
The VMAs organizers decided that the show should return to Barclays. That was the earlier scheduled venue for the 2020 award show, but the plans had to be switched due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
While the countdown for the VMAs were on, the executive producer, Jesse Ignjatovic, made it known that they leaned more into the X.R. environment. This was aimed at getting fewer bodies, less crew, and a schedule for performances instead of having everyone together.
As planned, the video award show aired live across 175 countries and more. The last time the VMAs aired live was in 2012. However, it felt good that fans could watch their favorite acts in the comfort of their homes.
