Peter Philips, a creative image director and makeup artist at Dior, chose a minimalist beauty approach in the pre-fall 2024 show in Brooklyn. Here, he emphasized a soft, red wine-stained lip. Dior creative director Maria Grazia wanted a nude eye, and of course, Philips did not disappoint.
Philips usually achieves the nude eye look by curling the lashes, skipping mascara, and using dark brown or black eyeshadow to tighten the lower lash line, depending on the model. Additionally, he uses a flat brush to push the eyeshadow into the roots of the lashes, giving them a fuller look without using mascara. Philips says he does not use an eyeliner but something in between. The result of what he does is almost imperceptible.

At Dior’s pre-fall 2024 show, the focus was firmly on the lips, clean skin, and moderately defined eyes. Contrary to the black lips featured in the spring 2024 show, Dior creative director Maria Grazia chose a softer, aubergine-inspired look. On the other hand, Philips created the perfect hue using Dior Rogue Forever lipstick in shades 111 Forever Night and 670 Rose Blues.
Philips dusted the color over the lip line with an eye brush for a more diffused and imperfect effect. The outcome? A chic and confident look that evoked the modern Dior woman. Contrary to popular belief, no handbook guides the eye makeup to wear after age 40. Makeup should be an act of self-expression that further enhances one’s natural beauty. So, if your favorite shimmery eyeshadow or cat-eye does not seem the same as it did in your 20s and 30s, you should not abandon it. Instead, adjust your application methods to suit the trending style.

Expert Eye Makeup Tips for Those Over 40
Makeup artist Jamie Greenberg advises that learning and practicing bring about perfection. However, you don’t necessarily have to learn from a makeup artist, particularly if you are familiar with your face or can’t access an expert. So, should you be in this position, here are some makeup tips. Greenberg notes that most women blend shimmery eyeshadow too high above their crease. Shimmery eyeshadow accentuates textured skin, so applying it in areas with less texture is better. You can apply shimmer on the lid for a brighter look or use it as a light eyeliner.
Highlighting the inner corners of your eyes, much like you would your cheekbones, can also enhance your look. Greenberg recommends adding some shimmer to this area as well. For example, Gwyneth Paltrow often uses shimmery champagne eyeshadow on the inner corners of her eyes to create a fresh, bright effect.
While a charcoal or pewter smoky eye often comes to mind for a classic look, dark colors are not the only options. In fact, a smokey eye can be any color. Just ensure that the roots are of the darkest shades. For instance, Jennifer Lopez’s lavender smokey eyes are a perfect illustration of smokey, not necessarily dark, colors. Greenberg recommends filling the lash line with a black liner or shadow for a moderate depth. As seen on Victoria Beckham, Greenberg advises keeping dark colors below the crease when creating a smoky eye. “Avoid bringing darker colors above the crease unless you have smooth, untextured skin. This will prevent drawing attention to textured areas,” she says.

For the record, Greenberg is in her 40s. As she ages, she realizes the need to change how she applies her cat eye. Greenberg recommends making the wing length shorter, as it would prevent unnecessary attention from being drawn to the eyes. Balancing the eye look with the rest of the face is crucial for makeup.
Besides opting for a few individual lashes, Greenberg advises accentuating the cheeks with a creamy, blendable blush. Notably, Greenberg is a fan of bold lip. And yes, she loves it in any shade.
