After facing backlash over her State of the Union response last week, Alabama GOP Sen. Katie Britt revealed on Wednesday, March 14, 2024, that Speaker Mike Johnson told her, “It’ll be fine.” Britt said Johnson told her to ignore “horror stories” and that the moment wouldn’t ruin her career.
“The funny thing is, [Johnson’s] like, ‘No, don’t worry about it, you know’,” she said. “‘People are going to tell you horror stories about things that happened and people’s careers being blown up over it.'” Britt added, “And he’s like, ‘It’ll be fine.'”
Still recovering from the blowback of her speech, Britt revealed this while speaking to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his co-host Ben Ferguson on an episode of the “Verdict with Ted Cruz” podcast. Following her rebuttal, Britt’s speech exposed the previously little-known Alabama senator to strong criticism.
Most people took offense at the details of a graphic sex-trafficking story Katie Britt used to highlight Biden’s immigration policies. Also, the incident occurred in Mexico during President George W. Bush’s administration. Hence, the Alabama senator faced heavy backlash.

In her speech, Britt said she spoke with a woman who “had been sex-trafficked by the cartels starting at age 12.” Furthermore, Katie Britt claimed the woman told her the cartels raped her every day and how many times they raped her daily. “We wouldn’t be OK with this happening in a Third World country,” she added.
“This is the United States of America, and it is past time, in my opinion, that we start acting like it.” Britt also took a swipe at Biden, saying, “President Biden’s border crisis is a disgrace.” Shortly after her speech, a viral TikTok by journalist Jonathan Katz clarified the details of Britt’s speech.

Katz alleged that the sex-trafficking incident she referenced in her speech happened in the early 2000s, during President Bush’s administration, not the Biden administration. However, Katie Britt did not address these allegations in Wednesday’s podcast with Cruz.
Instead, she blamed the “liberal media” multiple times for turning against her in the wake of her address. The Alabama senator accused the media of failing to cover the underlying story. “They want to silence a conservative woman for speaking out on this topic,” she told Cruz.
“They don’t want to bring light and help the women who are actually getting trafficked.” Furthermore, Katie Britt added that the media “didn’t do their homework.” Britt deflected when asked about the woman in her speech.

She said she didn’t mean to give the impression that the story happened under Biden. Also, on Sunday, March 10, 2024, Karla Jacinto Romero, the victim that Katie Britt was referring to, spoke to CNN.
Jacinto Romero said that Britt had inaccurately portrayed her story when she alleged that drug cartels trafficked her. Hence, she clarified that a pimp in Mexico who would entrap young women trafficked her. While discussing the backlash, Katie Britt referred to movie star Scarlett Johansson playing her on “SNL” over the weekend.
“I mean, how awesome is that?” Britt asked. “Scarlett Johansson, here you have Black Widow.” She added, “They bring in someone from Avengers to play me in the cold open. I’m here for it.”
