During the 1990s, Hollywood tabloids regularly debated how tall Mel Gibson was. However, what’s his exact height?
For movie fans who were born before the 1970s, most would recognize Australian actor Mel Gibson for his brilliant performance as a futuristic warrior in the 1979 movie “Mad Max.” The movie achieved the most success for any Australian film to date, grossing more than $100 million.
That same year, his portrayal of a mentally disabled man in “Tim” earned Gibson his first Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor. The actor received his second award for his performance in the World War I movie “Gallipoli.”
At that time, whatever movie project Gibson touched on turned into gold. He reprised his role in “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” and “Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome,” with great success. Even “The River,” his American debut film, earned four Academy Award nominations.
His cop movie “Lethal Weapon” and its sequels alongside Danny Glover propelled his fame in America. Gibson made his directorial debut with the film “The Man Without a Face,” in which he also starred.
In 1995, Gibson’s fame rose to new heights by directing and starring as 13th-century Scottish nobleman Sir William Wallace in the epic movie “Braveheart.” The film won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director.
For new movie watchers, Gibson is the acclaimed director of “The Passion of the Christ.” He is also responsible for the famous 2006 historical epic movie “Apocalypto.” In 2010, Gibson returned to acting as a police detective in the thriller “Edge of Darkness.”
The veteran star also starred in “Get the Gringo,” “Machete Kills,” and “The Expendables 3.” He is also the brain that directed the Golden Globe-nominated movie, “Hacksaw Ridge.”
How Tall Is Mel Gibson?
Mel Gibson is 5ft 9 tall. His height caused a lot of controversy for many years in Hollywood. Many believed he was shorter; others thought he was taller. Although he’s not the tallest of actors, Gibson has led a successful career since his debut.
Mel Gibson’s Height Issue
Gibson’s height has remained a talking point throughout his career. In 1990 a newspaper wrote that the actor found talks about his height very amusing. Some believed he’s 5 foot 4 but only got listed as 5 foot 10 because of studio publicity.
Another newspaper disclosed that the actor struggles to hit 5ft 8in, and his height had caused issues while filming. Unfortunately, this allegation is accurate, and it happened when Gibson was filming “The Year of Living Dangerously” opposite 5ft 11 actress Sigourney Weaver.
Gibson had to wear built-up shoes and even stood on a box to be at eye level with his co-star. In addition, the actor admitted that he had to wear elevator shoes during their love scenes. Also, on the height issue, Weaver told CNN:
“There are actors who are insecure. Sometimes very tall actors go, “How tall are you?” And you just go, you are towering over me, you can’t be — one of the most secure was actually Mel Gibson. He didn’t care if I was three inches you know, I could wear huge heels and he’d be fine with it.”
While filming “Living Dangerously,” Gibson’s height also caused problems for the crew. Most believed the actor’s height to be between 5ft 9 and 5ft 10, but they were wrong. Gibson’s co-star John Philip Law, had to kneel to have Gibson look the same height regularly.
Mel Gibson Has One of The Costliest Divorces
Mel Gibson and Robin Moore were married from 1980 to 2009, and during their marriage, the couple welcomed seven children together during their marriage. While Gibson chased his career, Moore stayed at home, taking care of the kids.
Moore’s dedication allowed Gibson to focus solely on his career, which yielded profits for the family. The actor made a fortune from his endeavors and became a global movie star.
However, things started unraveling when Gibson got arrested for drunk driving to which he pleaded a no-contest in 2009. During his arrest, the police also accused the actor of using anti-semitic and racist words.
Three years later, Gibson got into trouble when he impregnated his girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. After Moore found out about his transgressions, she immediately filed for divorce.
The couple didn’t sign a prenuptial agreement, so according to the law, Moore would get half of everything Gibson made during their marriage. When calculated, the actor had made close to $1 billion.
Demi Moore and Gibson finalized their divorce in 2011 in a Los Angeles courtroom. The mother of seven walked away with a whopping $425 million as her divorce settlement. As a result, the divorce became the costliest ever in Hollywood.
What Is Gibson Upto Nowadays?
The veteran actor recently took to the streets of Prague as a tourist. Local newspapers captured the pictures of Gibson in central Prague, walking on the Charles Bridge and other parts.
Gibson, who had just finished filming the Tv series “The Continental” in Budapest, looked happy as he took in the sights. Before arriving in Prague, the actor had toured Vienna, where he attended a concert by the Vienna Mozart Orchestra.
However, this is not the first time Gibson will be visiting the Czech Republic. In 2014 the actor attended the 2014 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Gibson received a Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema at the event.
