Hollywood Veteran Donald Sutherland Dies at 88

A Hollywood veteran and well-loved actor, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. Sutherland’s death was announced by his son, Keifer Sutherland, who is also an actor. 

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, Keifer took to X to celebrate the life of his late father, who was well-known in the acting world. Keifer wrote on X that he was sad to have to share this tragedy and pain with the world.

He went to eulogize his father, describing him as one of the most important actors in the history of film. He said his father never fear to take in any role, regardless of how challenging it was.

Keifer claimed that Sutherland couldn’t have lived a more fulfilling life, noting that he adored his work as an actor. The cause of his death remains unknown. Sutherland was 88 years old at the time of his passing.

Sutherland, tall and charismatic, transitioned from supporting roles to becoming the go-to leading man for many romantic dramas of his time. Throughout his career, he started alongside a slew of Hollywood Belles, including Jane Fonda and Julie Christie.

Among his most well-known roles were those of Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s “MASH,” which takes place in a Korean War-era military field hospital, and of a hopeless father in Robert Redford’s Oscar-winning feature debut, “Ordinary People.”

Following his breakthrough in the late ‘60s, Sutherland starred in iconic 1970s films like “Animal House,” “MASH,” “Klute,”and “Don’t Look Now.” His depiction as President Coriolanus Snow, the dictatorial ruler in “The Hunger Games” and its sequels, garnered him admirers from a new generation.

While highly regarded in Hollywood, he never received an Academy Award nomination but was awarded an honorary statuette in 2017. Sutherland’s Hollywood career in the acting industry lasted over 70 years. His last movie was a 2023 drama of a different period titled “Miranda’s Victim.”

In 1995, he won an Emmy award for his portrayal of the character Mikhail Fetisov in a TV series titled “Citizen X.” Subsequently, in 2006, he got a second Emmy nomination for his role in the series “Human Trafficking.”

However, his career was suddenly boosted after he was cast in the popular movie franchise “The Hunger Games.” Sutherland portrayed the character of the franchise antagonist  President Snow.

His son, Kiefer Sutherland followed his father’s footsteps and joined the movie business. Keifer is well known for his portrayal of Jack Bauer in the popular drama series “24.” He also played Tom Kirkman in “Designated Survivor.”

With his ex-wife Shirley Douglas, whom he was married to from 1966 to 1970, Donald shared Keifer and his twin sister Rachel. The Emmy winner also shared three kids, Angus, Rossif, and Roeg, with his second wife Francine Racette. Donald and Racette got married in 1972 and were together until his death.
