Elon Musk announced on Wednesday that he would refrain from donating to any presidential candidate. This statement followed a report by The New York Times revealing Musk’s meeting with Donald Trump in Florida.

Elon Musk made it unequivocal on X, stating, “Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President.”

This decision from Musk isn’t entirely unexpected, as despite his considerable wealth, he has never been a major donor in American politics. However, Trump’s reported meeting with Musk aligned with his efforts to solicit campaign contributions.

Currently, President Joe Biden’s campaign maintains an edge over Trump’s, exacerbated by the former president’s dependence on political action committees to cover his legal expenses.

Musk, who admitted to voting for Biden in 2020, has consistently criticized the president. However, when questioned last year about whether this indicated support for Trump, Musk was evasive in his response.

“I wouldn’t vote for Biden,” Musk asserted during a New York Times event with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin. “I’m not saying I’d vote for Trump.”

With former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley suspending her campaign on Wednesday, both major parties have essentially selected their nominees, despite ongoing voting in some states.

Beyond Trump and Biden, the 2024 election is anticipated to see a range of third-party candidates, including noted vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Musk previously hosted an audio chat on Twitter last summer featuring Kennedy, who was then a Democratic presidential candidate.

One user commented, “I remember when Musk flew to Mar a Lago the day after the court’s ruling of $367M plus fine for DT’s widespread financial fraud over decades.  Elon is dense but I hope he knows DT has a long history of screwing people over, and not paying as agreed.”

Another added, “Musk is a proven liar. Trump is a proven liar and fraud master.  It is not surprising that they would like each other, but Musk isn’t a business like Trump is. Musk already threw $40billion at a losing venture (buying X) – he’s not throwing more money after another losing venture — Trump’s election chances.”

The New York Times reported on Tuesday that Donald Trump met with multibillionaire Elon Musk on Sunday in Palm Beach, Florida. During the meeting, Trump discussed potential support for his campaign from Musk and other Republican donors.

Trump is reportedly seeking a cash infusion for his campaign as he prepares for a potential rematch against President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. Despite their conflicting relationship, Trump has praised Musk to his allies and hopes to secure further support from him in the future.

The potential penalties against Donald Trump in the business fraud case and E. Jean Carroll’s defamation trial are substantial, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.

These legal challenges could increase the pressure on Trump to seek financial support for his campaign, especially as he faces the possibility of significant financial liabilities.
