A continuous and heavy downpour of rain has caused Florida’s state governor to declare a state of emergency. The severe rainfall has resulted in the flooding of South Florida, making the area inaccessible to its residents.
The rainfall, which started on Monday, June 10, 2024, lasted several hours, resulting in flight cancellations and the evacuation of Florida residents from their homes. Flash flood warnings were issued for Miami-Dade and Broward counties due to heavy rainfall, causing street flooding and traffic congestion.
According to reports on rain totals, it recorded 25 inches in Collier, 20 in North Miami, and 19 in Hollywood. Additionally, 13 inches of rain total were recorded at Miami Beach and 12 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Consequently, Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a state of emergency for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties.
On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, Sarasota recorded 3.93 inches of rain within an hour of falling, a historic record. The rain resulted in the grounding of flights at both Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood international airports for over seven hours. Chris Stephen, a grounded traveler, said that he tried finding other ways to travel both by air and land, but to no avail.

Before Desanti’s declaration, the mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Dean Trantalis, had declared a state of emergency. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava also issued a state of emergency in her city.
Taking to X, Trantalis announced the flooding of numerous roads across Fort Lauderdale, affecting traffic and mobility. The fire department conducted over 40 rescue missions, according to reports. Areas in south Florida with poor to little drainage have suffered the most from the extreme weather.

In Lee County, an operation was carried out to rescue a driver who was trapped on the flooded highway. According to reports, a tornado caused the uprooting of several trees and the destruction of power lines in Martin County.
According to weather reports, more rain is expected to fall, with the severe weather expected to last until Saturday, June 15, 2024. The severe downpour is part of a network of storms that has overwhelmed Florida with large amounts of rain.
As of 10 in the evening of June 11, 2024, flood warnings were still being issued in areas such as Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Additionally, the National Weather Service was forced to announce a flash flooding notice for the area between northern Miami-Dade and southern Broward.

The notice requested that residents of the area should evacuate to areas that were a lot higher than sea level. The warning had described the event as an exceedingly risky and potentially fatal one. The agency suggested residents move to an area designed as a safe zone and no person should attempt to travel.
Forecasters predict rainy, stormy weather in South Florida through the workweek, tapering by the weekend. Consequently, the region will get a little bit drier, while storms may still occur sometimes.
