Marianne Williamson, the author and speaker, announced she is suspending her campaign for president following her third-place finish in the Nevada primary. With just 3% of the vote, Williamson trailed far behind President Joe Biden, who received 89%, and the option “none of these candidates,” which garnered 6%. ABC News first reported her decision.

Having continued her 2024 White House bid through the Nevada primary, Williamson faced struggles with momentum and resources, especially after a disappointing showing in New Hampshire. In the Granite State’s first-in-the-nation contest, she garnered only about 4% of the vote, trailing Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, who received 20%, and President Biden, who received 66% through a write-in campaign.

While she did finish ahead of Phillips in the South Carolina Democratic primary, her performance there was overshadowed by her inability to break through against Biden, the incumbent president.

Williamson made history on February 26, 2023, by becoming the first person to challenge the sitting president for the Democratic nomination when she announced her 2024 presidential campaign. Her announcement took place at Union Station in Washington, D.C., alongside other challengers like Phillips and progressive commentator Cenk Uygur.

Despite her significant investments in New Hampshire, where she held over 200 events across 300 towns, Williamson failed to gain the momentum she had hoped for. Although she spent 17 consecutive days in the state, participating in over 85 events, her efforts did not translate into sufficient voter support.

In an interview with ABC News before the New Hampshire primary, Williamson expressed concerns about the financial viability of her campaign. Federal Election Commission filings revealed that her campaign ended 2023 with debts exceeding the amount of cash on hand by nearly $400,000.

Following the New Hampshire primary, Williamson engaged in a candid Zoom call with volunteers and supporters, where she discussed the state of her candidacy and sought feedback. Despite fervent support from her backers, including one elderly donor who had contributed significantly to her campaign, Williamson was undecided about her future in the race.

Ultimately, Williamson made the decision to extend her campaign through the Nevada primary. In a video posted on social media, she acknowledged the challenges posed by her opponent’s well-funded advertising efforts in New Hampshire but affirmed her commitment to continuing the fight.

However, Williamson’s path forward became increasingly uncertain, especially in light of her struggles to gain traction in South Carolina, a state where Biden’s influence was deeply entrenched. Consequently, she decided to suspend her campaign, recognizing that she would be unable to make significant headway against the political establishment and Biden’s reelection bid.

Marianne Williamson, 71, gained prominence as a best-selling self-help author, propelled further into the public eye when endorsed by Oprah Winfrey through her book club. Throughout her campaign, Williamson advocated for overhauling the economic system, establishing a Department of Peace and a Department of Children and Youth, and reforming housing, drug, and crime policies, among other platforms.

While her presidential bid may have ended, Williamson’s impact on the political landscape will be remembered, particularly for her bold vision and commitment to advocating for change.
