Why Was a Grey’s Anatomy Episode Dedicated to Bob Verne?
The answer to this is quite simple. Bob Verne was the father to Krista Vernoff, who also happens to be a top executive producer of “Grey’s Anatomy” and its spin-off series, “Station 19.”
Due to her father’s passing, Krista used her own experience with her father’s short battle with cancer to tell her story. In the series, as Bob Verne did, George O’Malley’s father, Harold O’Malley, also dies after battling esophageal cancer.
Verne’s story was told through George Dzundza’s portrayal of Harold O’Malley, while Krista’s grief and pain were shown through George O’Malley. The episode was titled “Six Days” and is one of the saddest episodes in the entire series.
Krista wrote about the episode and its impact on her public blog. She wrote, “The card at the end [of the attack] was a tribute to my father. He called me one day at my office at “Charmed” and told me he thought he had the flu. A week later, he had surgery on a massive tumor at the base of his esophagus.
Before the surgery, he was laughing and celebrating with his family. He had a profoundly positive attitude. My dad truly believed he could fight that cancer and live if only they would remove the tumor.
The surgeon did as he wished. And I have yet to forgive that surgeon for that decision completely.”
Fans commended the production and storyline of the episode as it was pretty moving, and everyone felt a lot of emotions watching it.
