A Minnesota state senator has been arrested and charged with first-degree theft, police said.
Sen. Nicole Mitchell is at the Capitol conducting state business on a typical workday this week. But this week, police caught her sneaking into someone else’s house, dressed head to toe in black like a “Scooby-Doo” villain.
Democratic Senators. Nicole Mitchell was arrested after being found at a home in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, nearly four hours northwest of the Woodbury she represents, Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steve Todd told USA TODAY.
Todd said Mitchell, 49, was booked into the Becker County Jail on Monday and is being held on theft charges Around 4:45 p.m.
Monday, police responded to a homeowner reporting a burglary, Todd said.
Police found a woman in the home, who they later identified as Mitchell. The Star Tribune reported that county property tax records show that as of 2022, Mitchell’s stepmother and late father lived on the property where the burglary occurred.
Mitchell was elected in 2022 and is still serving his first term. Before that, she was a television meteorologist and commander of the Air National Guard.
The Minnesota Democratic Farmer-Labor Group declined to comment but said it was “aware of the situation,” CBS News reported. “The public expects lawmakers to maintain high standards of conduct,”

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson said in a statement to CBS News. “As information is revealed, we hope that consequences will be commensurate with his actions, both in the courts and in his role in the Legislature.”
About recent news: Nicole Mitchell said, Like so many other families, my family faced the pain of watching a loved one decline from Alzheimer’s disease and paranoia related to it.
Over the weekend, I learned some medical information that worried me and prompted me to get this family member checked.

I walked into a house I had been to and from countless times over the past 20 years, where my son used to have his room.
Unfortunately, I scared this relative, which further aggravated the paranoia, and I was accused of theft, which I deny.
Thank you to all my friends (and colleagues on both sides) for your kind words of support and for believing in my character before I had a chance to respond.
This tragedy is truly for our family, and I hope it will become a private matter again.
