Angelina Jolie and her father, Jon Voight, are both Hollywood icons in their own rights, and they also get the recognition for it. However, the pair were also recognized by the long-spanning family feud they were shrouded in.
The iconic father-daughter pair of Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie are famous for their movie prowess. The fame also extends to the long-time feud that plagued their father-daughter relationship.
For many years, the duo’s back and forth played out on the spotlight scene. Jolie dropped Voight’s last name and he, in turn, denied some of the claims against him.
The Chronicles of Their Feud
The “Salt” star experienced abandonment as a child when her father divorced her mom, Marcheline Bertrand. Bertrand and Voight met as Hollywood youngsters who fell in love.
When she was 21, Bertrand and Voight got married and welcomed two children, James Haven and Angelina Jolie. However, when Jolie was barely one, Voight decided he was done with marriage.
Voight showed he was pretty much not done with playing the field. Bertrand had very much settled onto motherhood and was 28 when Voight announced that he wanted a divorce. Two things were broken–Bertrand’s marriage and her heart.
Jolie once recalled how her mother fell apart. The A-lister shared that her mom gave up her career, and Voight left her in the lurch. Jolie noted that her father emotionally abused her mother.
Inside Jolie’s Feud With Voight
Bertrand was said to have raised her two children all by herself. Susan Margaret, who was mom to one of Jolie’s childhood friends, shared that Voight did not treat his ex-wife well.
On the other hand, Voight denied some of the claims, noting that he sent love to his children and that he was responsible for them financially. While in the spotlight, Jolie dropped her last name, “Voight.”
Bertrand passed away in 2007 after battling ovarian cancer. At the time, she drew up her will, which summed at $2 million, and a $180,000 deficit which she noted was what Voight owed her in child support.
Voight denied this insisting that he did not owe her. In the following years, Jolie’s rift with her father got tense. In her twenties, the actress experienced a heightened period in her sexuality.
Jolie resorted to self-mutilation, with instances of when she scribbled her husband, John Miller’s name on her silk shirt with her blood. In her marriage to Billy Thorton, the pair had vials around their necks, with the other person’s blood.
Her father was worried by all these events, and he addressed it publicly, but it did not sit right with Jolie. For years, the “elephant in the room” only got fatter.
Times of Reconciliation
In the later years of their feud, Voight soon started feeling the void of their rift. The “Midnight Cowboy” star tried to reconcile with his daughter, but his efforts were futile.
The pair briefly reconciled when they starred as father and daughter in “Tomb Raider.” However, in 2018, a reconciliation more promising, more permanent happened.
This was at the time when Jolie was in the heat of her divorce from Brad Pitt. The Oscar winner knew her children needed their grandfather, and Voight, who was 80 at the time, couldn’t be any happier.
