Few screenplay creators can match up to Tony Shalhoub, particularly in his genre. Of course, there’s Tom Cruise of the Mission Impossible franchise for blockbusters.
Also, there’s Rowan Atkinson of the Mr Bean franchise for comedy. Likewise, Tony Shalhoub had a blossomful career creating and honing the Adrian Monk character.
Shalhoub’s last appearance as the Adrian Monk TV character was in 2009, in what the producers called “Mr. Monk and the End.” Back then, TV viewers mostly saw the obsessive-compulsive detective as an oddity. However, after the new normal that many adjusted to during the COVID lockdown, the average person may easily relate to his comeback movie.

Before the 14-year hiatus of Adrian Monk, we all watched on in awe and cheered disbelief as an obsessive germaphobe worked with the San Fransisco Police Department to solve knotty investigations.
In the shows, Monk would be brought in when criminal investigations have hit a brick wall. But the case would usually get solved thanks to Monk’s odd perspectives and different ways of seeing things.
Interestingly, after the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a sudden inspiration to bring back the hand-wiping and crowd-avoiding Monk. Before the recent pandemic, many scripts have been presented as a continuity for Monk, but Shalboub didn’t think them worthy of a return.

During a recent interview with The Associated Press, Shalhoub said everyone looked down on the Monk character before the pandemic. However, after the compulsory lockdown of the entire planet, it is now easy to see things from Monk’s perspective.
So, that serves as the bedrock for the return of Monk in “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.” The 90-minute movie premiered last Friday on Peacock.
After being out of the Monk character for 14 years, Shalhoub joked about what it would be like to return to the set. He said of the Eagles rock band that after their 1980 separation, they came together in 1994.
Glenn Frey, a founding member of Eagle, claimed band members merely went on a 14-year vacation. So, Shalhoub feels the Monk cast had the same nostalgic experience. In this Monk comeback, Shalhoub reconnected with original stars of the Monk series like Jason Grey-Stanford, Ted Levine, Traylor Howard, Hector Elizondo, and Melora Hardin.

Mr. Monk’s Last Case opens in present-day San Francisco. Adrian Monk, the obsessive detective, managed to survive the pandemic. Of course, his germaphobic habits helped him through.
Monk spent most of the lockdown in a full-armor suit and self-administered home rapid test in 20-minute intervals throughout the lockdown.
Interestingly, Monk emerges to find every other survivor of the pandemic being as hygiene-obsessive as he is. So, everyone now sees Monk as normal, but the world is now strange to Monk.
The Monk character is the center of Tony Shalhoub’s character and has won him many nominations and awards. Shalhoub got three Emmy Awards for the eight-season run of the Monk series. When asked if this would be the last viewers would see of Adrian Monk, Shalhoub said he couldn’t give his word that this was the final comeback.
