Jimmy Carter, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning 39th President of the United States, died on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100. His son, James E. Carter III, told The Washington Post that he died at home in Plains, Georgia. The Carter Center also posted about his passing on X (previously Twitter).

Rosalynn Carter, Jimmy Carter’s wife of over eight decades, died 13 months ago at the age of 96. As a result, he made his very last public appearance in November 2023 to mourn her passing. The Carter Center reported in February 2023 that the former president had been transferred to hospice care after a series of brief hospitalizations.

They said that he had decided to spend his remaining days at home with his family. Carter’s extended stay in hospice perplexed the entire family, according to his grandson Jason Carter, who added that it had turned out to be a true blessing.

In June, Jason informed Southern Living that Carter was no longer awake every day. He also stated that his grandfather was trying to experience the world as much as possible while going through this process.

Despite a spate of health issues over the last decade, including a cancer diagnosis in 2015, President Jimmy Carter stayed active even into his 90s. He carried on working for Habitat for Humanity, attended church services, and taught Sunday school.

When Was Jimmy Carter Born?

James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, at the Wise Sanitarium. He was the oldest child of Bessie Lillian Gordy and James Earl Carter Sr. and a descendant of English immigrant Thomas Carter, who arrived in the Colony of Virginia in 1635.

Carter attended Plains High School from 1937 to 1941, completing in the eleventh grade because the school did not have a twelfth grade. Carter played basketball for Plains High School as a teenager. He also joined Future Farmers of America, which aided him in establishing a lifetime passion for woodworking.

In 1941, he began his undergraduate engineering studies at Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. Carter transferred the following year to the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, which was led by civil rights pioneer Blake Van Leer.

Jimmy Carter fell in love at the Academy with Rosalynn Smith, a friend of his sister Ruth. The two married immediately after his graduation in 1946 and lived a beautiful life together until her tragic passing on November 19, 2023.

Jimmy Carter was sworn in as the 39th president on January 20, 1977. One of Carter’s first acts was to fulfill a campaign pledge by releasing Proclamation 4483, which declared unqualified amnesty for draft evaders during the Vietnam War.

Carter is survived by his four children with Rosalynn: Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy. He became the longest-living American president in March 2019 and the one with the longest post-White House career. His marriage to Rosalynn lasted 77 years, the longest of any first spouse.

Jimmy Carter established the United States Department of Energy and is behind policies defining national energy goals. He has also been praised for deregulating domestic petroleum pricing to boost output.

Carter was in New York to speak at a church in 1984 when he visited a Habitat for Humanity construction site, based on the organization’s website. Carter and his wife returned to the site with scores of other volunteers to assist in renovating an apartment complex.

So, the first Carter Work Project was started, which is now a week-long yearly event. In 1982, Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter founded a non-profit organization focused on human rights.

According to the Carter Center’s website, the organization is now in charge of observing 114 elections in 39 countries to help develop and strengthen democracies. It has an impact on novel public health methods for disease prevention and control in Africa and Latin America.

Carter was a key figure in the Camp David Accords, a set of agreements that served to calm Egypt’s troubled relationship with Israel. 

He sought to re-establish the Geneva Conference to resolve Arab-Israeli tensions from the start of his presidency. Ultimately, two weeks of covert deliberations at the United States presidential retreat Camp David produced results.
