Squid Game season 2 promised to be as captivating as the first one. Viewers were itching to see the main character take on and dismantle the criminal enterprise responsible for the kidnap and death of hundreds of players. Viewers were also hoping for it to hit the nail on the head, get in on the action real quick, and solve the leftover puzzles from the first part.
If you’ve followed the compelling story from its first installment, there’s no way you weren’t fascinated with the amazing story of the super-lucky Seong Gi-hun. After enduring a life of misery and despair, the divorced gambler character, who was played by Lee Jung-Jae, found his way to a massive fortune. But not without risking his life as the popular Player 456.
After numerous twists and turns, he emerged as the last man standing from multiple exciting games. A sequel promised to give us more insight into his life as a billionaire. Then, there was the terrifying organ-harvesting aspect of the movie that must have left you puzzled and hungry for a more conclusive resolution.
Part 2 promised to show us how Gi-hun would take his revenge on the organizers of the game. Indeed, the expectations of hundreds of millions of viewers rested on part 2. It’s finally here! So, did it satisfy the cravings? The reviews will tell us.

What Are the Reviews Saying About the Netflix Squid Game Season 2?
“Feel like delaying tactics,” says Rebecca Nicholson, one of the Guardian’s trusted movie reviewers. “And considering that this is Squid Game, it is all rather ordinary,” she added. Contrary to widespread expectations, Squid Game Season 2 spent a number of episodes circling the block before getting into the action.
“When we get into the actual games, the smash-hit K-drama finds its feet,” she explained. “But it spends far too many episodes dragging its heels extremely painfully.” She gave the movie just two stars. However, another critic from The Times made a contrary assessment.
Impressed by the movie, their review stated that it was a success. Unlike others, this critic saw why the movie put off the nervy games until after some episodes. They gave the movie four stars.
“Although the obvious temptation is to throw the viewer straight back into the arena of horror, with 456 new breathless players being manipulated and mutilated in ever-more creative ways (don’t worry, there’s plenty of that to come), the first few episodes confidently explore life on the outside,” the critic reasoned.
Who Is Returning for Squid Game Season 2?
Whether on the outside or inside, Gi-hun has one mission—to unravel the brains behind the bloodthirsty game. On his way to accomplish this objective, he will have many new faces to contend with, plus mysterious characters to unravel. But he will also reunite with some old faces.
One of the returning faces is the Front Man, who has coordinated the game all along. Played by Lee Byung-hun, the frontman also happens to be a former winner of the game, as revealed in season one. We’ll see how far he will go to stop Gi-hun and ensure the game continues.
Gi-hun isn’t alone in his quest to get revenge and end the game. Hwang Jun-ho, played by Wi Ha-jun, has already infiltrated the game and seeks to bring the structure down. Sadly for him, he has been acting without support. But will he be able to team up with Gi-hun?

Yes! The release date for Squid Game Season 2 has been set. Fans have started streaming the series on Netflix since December 26, 2024 (Check here for when and where to watch). Like its predecessor, season 2 is expected to become a huge commercial success.
The first Squid Game was Netflix’s most-watched show ever, drawing over 1.65 billion watch hours in its first four weeks. As of now, it has been viewed for over 2.8 billion hours. The series first season even added a whopping $900 million to Netflix’s value.
So, director Hwang Dong-hyuk has a big task on his hands. One challenge he has to scale is blending in the hundreds of new characters in the movie.
Interestingly, despite its massive success, director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that he didn’t benefit much in terms of finance from it. However, he is determined to have a different outcome from the second season.
Who Is the Frontman in Squid Game Season 2?
One character who has been promoted to the forefront in Squid Game season 2 is the frontman. Veteran actor Lee Byung-hun will play his role again and, this time, face-off with Gi-hun, who is determined to bring the game crashing down.
His performance will go a long way in swaying the reviews, which are still pouring in as people continue to watch the series. Hopefully, it will be able to build sufficient momentum for the much-touted season 3, which is expected to premiere in 2025.
