Colin Jost has an annual joke swap he does with Michael Che for Saturday Night Live that always leaves the audience holding their ribcages and those who the jokes are about, usually Jost and Che, mortified.
This year’s joke exchange was different because Jost, who gets inventive every December with his jokes, did not have to suffer the torture alone. SNL’s final episode for the year aired last weekend, and it saw one of the show’s most beloved traditions re-enacted.
Michael Che and Colin Jost’s annual Christmas joke swap is a “Weekend Update” segment that forces the pair to read jokes they were not shown in advance that they wrote for each other.

Since the tradition began, the jokes have become more hilarious, and Che has a reputation for every year. Once, he got an actual practicing rabbi — and, in another instance, a civil rights activist — to witness the offensive jokes he penned for Jost.
This year was even wilder because he got personal, making sure Scarlett Johansson, Colin Jost’s wife, was onsite with a camera in her face to capture her reaction to the swap as it happened.
The Joke Swap Included R-Rated Content
The joke swap began with Colin Jost announcing, per Che’s instruction, that he would read his jokes in “Black voice.” He quickly went on about slavery reparations and then turned his attention to Johansson.
“I want to dedicate this next joke to my boo, Scarlett Johansson,” Jost said. Once the camera cut to Johansson, who was watching backstage on a TV, a laugh slipped out. “Oh no. Oh my gosh, she’s so genuinely worried,” he quipped.
Returning to the joke, he said, “Hey, boo. Y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday…which means I’m about to get up out of there!” The joke made Jost drop his head in defeat, but Che was quick to remind him, “There’s more.”
So the mortified family man carried on. “Nah, nah, I’m just playing,” he read. “We just had a kid together, and y’all ain’t seen no pictures of him yet… because he’s Black as hell.” Meanwhile, backstage, Johansson was shown sipping her drink while shaking her head in disbelief. Of course, it didn’t end there because the next joke was a raunchy one.
He first brought up Costco’s recent decision to cut roast beef sandwiches from its menu, and as an image of one appeared on screen next to him, Jost announced that he’s been “eating roast beef every night since my wife had the kid.”
The joke shocked the audience, eliciting gasps from stunned mouths. Even Johansson could not hide her mortification when the camera cut to her. “Oh my God, holy s—!” She was caught exclaiming.
But Jost was not done yet. “Nah, nah, I’m just playin’, baby. You know I don’t go downtown… That’s gay as hell!” He continued, his throat bubbling with laughter.
Diddy, Epstein, and Jay-Z Got Honorable Mentions
Jost tried to get even by forcing Che to joke about the recent allegations against Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs.
“No, man. No, no, no,” Che said, but he went on to deliver the Jost-penned joke. “Some people are afraid to talk about it, but not Mikey ‘The Truth Bomb’ Che, so here it is: Jay-Z is innocent. He wasn’t even at those parties, and I know because I was!”
It was hard to choke back his laughter, but Che continued, “And Diddy, if you’re listening, we’re bad boys for life. When it comes to the charges against you, I’ll say the same thing I always said at your parties: I will help get you off.”
Che also had to read a joke about the box office success of “Moana 2”: “Like me and my good friend Jeffrey Epstein used to say, there’s nothing like an island adventure with a teenage girl.” He continued, “I’m just kidding. I would never, ever sleep with a girl as dark as Moana.”
How Colin Jost’s Wife Feels About His Joke Swap Segment
Colin Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson, had not yet heard this year’s jokes when she confessed earlier this year that the joke swap was not easy to watch and that she essentially “blacked out” during the May edition of the segment.
“We need to go into like witness protection after that night,” Johansson joked at the time. “Like, I am absolutely terrified we’re gonna be, like, targeted. It’s so bad. I black out for that period of the night. I don’t — I actually don’t remember it.”
Johansson described the segment as “brutal,” she added, “I feel like every year it gets worse. It’s just terrible.”
