During a recent interview, she described the Chicago-born rapper, who is also her lover, as “a bit bossy.” But there’s a lot more to learn about the studio life of Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend.
Hudson, 43, made the juicy revelations during her time on Late Night With Seth Meyers. She was on the interview to talk about her new holiday album, “The Gift of Love.” The album contained lovely Christmas tracks, including “Almost Christmas”— a song she did with the love of her life, Common.
Thankfully, she filled us in on the chemistry she and Common produced on the track. She also disclosed her reasons for picking him and lots more. “I mean, we’re both very musical,” she stated. Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend also had a quality she wanted for the track.
“Two Chicagoans and I was like, ‘Where’s the poetry and the storytelling in the holiday albums?’ And who better to do it than him? To do, like, spoken-word poetry for the holidays? And so that’s where the song came from,” she explained to the host, Seth Meyers.
But it wasn’t all rosy either. There was a little friction here and there, but it was nothing Hudson couldn’t handle. “He’s a bit bossy when it comes to being Common,” she disclosed. Notably, Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend’s actual name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn.
Hudson also contrasted the rapper with the regular guy. “Common and Rashid are two different people musically, but he’s a musical genius, so it’s an honor to be able to work from him, work for him, work with him, and on his album and my album,” she added.

Who Is Jennifer Hudson’s Boyfriend?
Hip hop hot cake, Common is Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend. Their love story began with rumors in 2022. Their collaboration for their movie “Breathe” set tongues wagging. But the pair had been friends for some time before that.
The pair seemingly confirmed their romance in January 2023 during a talk show. Hudson, who was the host, mischievously asked her guest, Common, about his relationship status, sparking a curious answer from the rapper. After laughing over the question, Common revealed that he was in a relationship.
“I’m in a relationship that is with one of the most beautiful people I’ve met in life,” he declared. “She’s smart, she loves God, she has something real down to earth about her. She’s talented,” he added. He gave more precise hints in his next statement. “She had to have an EGOT… had to win an Oscar on her first movie. She had to get her own talk show,” all of which pointed to Hudson.
Jennifer Hudson and her boyfriend Common, 54, have also spent quality time together in the music booth. Hudson’s boyfriend brought her in for The Auditorium Vol. 1, his collaborative studio album with producer Pete Rock. Hudson unleashed her musical genius in the track “A GOD (There Is).”
Did Common enjoy it? He did. The rapper expressed his joy with her input during an interview with PEOPLE magazine. His friends also loved it. “When I played it to musician friends, they were like, ‘Who is that singing?’ I’m like, ‘That’s Jennifer!’ It doesn’t sound like things you’ve heard from her before,” he stated.
“I love that we were able to utilize her gifts in a new space. She brought it, man,” he declared.
How Long Have Jennifer Hudson and Her Boyfriend Common Been Together
Since 2022, when they did the “Breathe” movie together, Jennifer Hudson and her boyfriend have spent a little more than two years together. Speaking on the relationship, Hudson said, “Everything is wonderful,” during an interview she gave at the 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards.
She, however, refused to make additional comments. “That’s all you need to know,” she told the media reps. Understandably, at the time, she and Common had said quite enough. This interview came shortly after her sit-down with Common on her show, where they both gave clues as to their relationship.
After disclosing who he was in love with during the talk show, Common threw the question back to Hudson. She responded with “Dating as well.” Speaking about the talk show in a subsequent interview, Common stated that he had fun with Hudson. “I felt like, man, why not just be loving and honest with who I am and who we are?” he added.

Jennifer Hudson and her boyfriend, Common, have spoken about marriage. The duo sat down together again on Hudson’s talk show in October 2024. During the session, the discussion shifted to Common’s recent comments about marriage. Earlier, the rapper had spoken about tying the knot in another interview.
On The Breakfast Club, Common stated that he and Hudson have a blissful relationship. He added some icing by stating he would love to walk down the aisle with her if he could. Hudson quizzed him about the remarks on her show. “I heard you’ve been out there talking about marriage. What’s that all about?” she asked.
Jennifer Hudson’s boyfriend then responded, “You know what, you told me a quote that your mother said, ‘A man knows what he wants.’” He added that he had made his decision and was only expressing it on the show in question. “I was just being honest,” he clarified.
A Common and Jennifer Hudson marriage will be the talk of the town if it happens. But she should brace up for a bossy husband when they step into the studio together.
