An unearthed clip from Britney Spears’ 2016 interview, in which she discussed her 13-year conservatorship, has gone viral.
Eight years ago, the 42-year-old pop artist appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show to promote her 2016 album, “Glory.” She also discussed how her conservatorship interfered with her creative process.
Though Spears’ staff infamously took out the words from the broadcast, the show published the never-before-seen footage on Sunday as part of a “memorable moments” section.
In this recently discovered video, Ross inquired about Britney Spears’ new album. He saw that she appeared more musically interested in this album than in previous ones. He then wondered whether she had taken more control, further questioning why it had taken her so long to take this step.
Britney Spears pondered before saying, “Well, um, there’s a lot of reasons, but I won’t get into the whole story.” The host reminded viewers about Britney Spears’ history, including her mental health issues. He emphasized that she did not have to discuss anything she was uncomfortable with.
Spears explained that since the conservatorship, she felt that many things were planned for her and that she was being told what to do. She expressed her desire to take full control of her new album, describing it as her “baby” that she wanted to create herself.
She mentioned being very strategic in her approach, which is why the album means so much to her. Britney Spears seemingly referenced this in her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me.” She wrote that she mentioned the conservatorship during a 2016 talk show interview. However, that part of the interview never aired. She added, “Huh, how interesting.”
Britney Spears’ Conservatorship Case
Britney Spears’s money and personal life have been managed by her father and others. For over 13 years, through a type of legal guardianship known as a conservatorship, Spears was at the mercy of her father.
The US pop singer, famed for singles including “Oops I Did It Again!” and “Toxic,” experienced a public mental health crisis in 2008, which led to the founding of the conservatorship. She began behaving strangely in 2007 after finalizing her divorce from Kevin Federline. She then lost custody of their two children.
A series of public episodes have aroused concerns about her mental health, including the actress shaving her head and striking a photographer’s car with an umbrella. In 2008, she was taken to the hospital twice under a temporary psychiatric assessment order. One of these incidents occurred after she allegedly refused to relinquish her sons during a police standoff.
Following these events, the court established a temporary conservatorship and made it permanent later that year. Her father argued in recent court filings that the conservatorship was “necessary to protect Britney in every sense of the word.” They also stated: “Her life was in shambles, and she was in physical, emotional, mental and financial distress.”
Britney Spears’ Conservatorship Case
In 2021, Britney Spears claimed in court testimony that she was drugged and compelled to perform against her will. She added that she was barred from having additional children while under conservatorship.
She declares she will not perform again while her father controls her career and officially requests that he be replaced as her conservator. In her testimony, Spears asserted that while she was under conservatorship, her management forced her to go on tour against her will.
They put her on lithium, which made her feel “drunk.” She was not allowed to marry or have a baby as she desired and was forced to use an IUD for birth control. Following her testimony, the court allowed Britney Spears to hire her lawyer.
This marked a significant change from the previous 13 years, during which she had to work with a court-appointed attorney. She then hired Rosengart, a former federal prosecutor and attorney who has defended numerous Hollywood celebrities.
In September 2021, a judge suspended Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, as her conservator less than two months before the conservatorship was terminated. Since the termination of her conservatorship in November 2021, Britney Spears has become quite active on social media. She frequently shares videos of herself dancing and writes lengthy messages for her admirers.
Additionally, she has released two singles: “Hold Me Closer” with Elton John and “Mind Your Business” with Will.i.am. She also published the instant best-seller memoir “The Woman In Me.” In her memoir, she described her “soul-crushing” years of conservatorship, stating that she felt “like a shadow of myself.”
