The Menendez brothers’ murder case has gained new attention following the release of a docuseries and a Netflix drama. The Netflix series creates a greater awareness and empathy for sexual abuse victims, exploring the dark relationship between the Menendez brothers and their parents.
Prosecutors have announced that they are reviewing the men’s life sentences without parole. The hurdle for prosecutors revisiting the murder convictions is not whether they killed their parents but how culpable they were.

What Is the Disturbing Story Of the Menendez Brothers?
In August 1989, Jose Menendez, an executive at RCA Records, and his wife Kitty Menendez were killed by shotgun blasts in their Beverly Hills home. Afterward, their son Lyle Menendez called 911 and stated, “Someone murdered my parents.”

In March 1990, authorities detained Lyle, and Erik Menendez surrendered a few days later after confessing to their therapist. Following their arrest, the Menendez brothers were accused of first-degree murder. In January 1994, the juries were deadlocked and unable to reach a decision.
The Menendez Brothers’ Trial
A retrial for the Menendez brothers with a single jury started in October 1995. This time, defense lawyers claim that a significant portion of the evidence about sexual assault is removed. Then, the brothers were found guilty of first-degree murder by the jury in March 1996.
Lyle and Erik Menendez received an indeterminate life sentence without the chance of parole in July of the same year. Decades later, a former member of the boy band Menudo claimed in a sworn document filed in May 2023 that Jose Menendez had sexually assaulted him when he was around 14 years old.
Following the release of the documentary series “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed” on Peacock, attorneys for the Menendez brothers filed a habeas petition. They requested that the court reconsider their conviction and sentencing in light of new evidence from a Menudo band member and a letter Erik wrote about the torture previous to the killings.
According to the letter, the attorneys request that the court either overturn the brothers’ conviction and imprisonment or allow for discovery and an evidentiary hearing in which they can give proof. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is considering the petition.

Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is a true-life story that premiered in September 2024. It is a nine-episode series about the Menendez brothers’ killings, developed by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan Erik Menendez.
In a message shared on social media by his wife, Erik chastised the show for its horrifying and obvious lies. He stated that the show returns the truth to an era when the prosecution constructed a narrative based on the notion that males were not sexually molested and that males experienced rape trauma differently than females.

At the outset of the series, the brothers’ therapist, Dr. Jerome Oziel (played by Dallas Roberts in the Netflix series), finds himself at the center of the investigation after Erik tells him everything. Oziel was also a contributing factor to their arrest owing to a breach of patient confidentiality.
Despite fears that the Menendez brothers would murder him after Erik’s confession, they did not. He is still alive, and during court sessions, he stated that they threatened his life.
What Was The Motive Of The Menendez Brothers?
Prosecutors alleged that the Menendez brothers‘ principal motivation was financial gain. They claimed Lyle and Erik killed their parents to inherit the family’s enormous inheritance, which is estimated to be worth more than $14 million.

The brothers, however, insisted that they acted out of fear and desperation. They claimed that their father, José Menendez, had abused them physically, emotionally, and sexually over many years.
According to their defense, the murders were motivated by the continuous maltreatment and their fear for their life. The case remains contentious, with ongoing debates over the exact motivations and scope of the alleged assault.
