For the first time in 2 decades, Scott Peterson has finally spoken out. For context, Peterson was convicted of double homicide after his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, went missing in 2004.
The new Peacock documentary, “Face to Face with Scott Peterson,” offers insight into the criminal case. The true-crime series will focus on Peterson’s perspective in the hope of giving the audience a better understanding of the murder story. While many anticipate the docuseries, here’s what we know.
The Docuseries: Face to Face With Scott Peterson
On Monday, July 29, 2024, Peacock released a trailer for the three-part docuseries, which is set to be released on August 20, 2024. The trailer included a facetime call with Peterson, marking his first on-camera interview since his conviction in 2003.
The series will explore all aspects of the case, including the conviction and Jon Buehler’s perspective as the case detective. In the trailer, Buehler said, “He didn’t want to pay child support; he didn’t want to pay spousal [support], and this is the way he thought about getting out of it.”

In addition to Buehler’s appearance, the series also features Janey Peterson, Laci’s sister, who has backed Peterson’s innocence. The docuseries will feature interviews with Producer Mike Gudgell, Scott Peterson’s ex-attorney Lara Yeretsian, and lead detective Al Brocchini from Modesto PD.
The docuseries will also feature the Los Angeles Innocence Project’s handling of Scott’s case in 2024.
Was Laci Peterson Ever Found?
Yes, she was. Laci Peterson’s husband, Scott Peterson, filed a missing person’s report after she vanished from the couple’s Modesto, California, home on December 24, 2002. In April 2003, the Laci and their baby’s remains were discovered on the shores of San Francisco Bay.
Afterward, a judge convicted Scott of first-degree and second-degree murder in November 2004 for killing Laci and her baby. In 2005, he received a death sentence. However, in 2020, the California Supreme Court overturned Scott Peterson’s conviction for capital punishment and mandated a new sentencing trial.
The court declared in its decision that Scott’s guilty judgment would stand. According to the court documents, Scott had argued that his trial had issues, such as excessive pre-trial media coverage. Consequently, the court upheld his conviction for murder, rejecting his argument that he was given an unfair trial.
However, the court acknowledged the trial judge’s significant errors in jury selection, following US Supreme Court precedent. Consequently, Scott’s right to an unbiased jury during the sentencing phase was compromised.
How Did Laci Peterson’s Baby Come Out?
According to evidence released on August 29, 2003, Laci Peterson’s baby Conner had been born before they were murdered. After he was born, Conner was wrapped in a bag and killed. The autopsy photos showed Connor’s well-preserved body in contrast to Laci’s remains.

According to the autopsy, Conner was likely born alive, as his body lacked an umbilical cord and placenta. Earlier reports revealed that the baby had a cut across his right shoulder and adhesive tape wrapped around his neck.
The tape ran from the left arm across the chest to the right arm, suggesting the baby was in a bag with tape wrapped around it. In April 2003, Laci and Conner’s remains washed up near the marina, where Scott Peterson claimed he went fishing alone the day before Christmas.
How Did Scott Peterson Meet His Wife?
Scott Peterson met Laci Peterson while they were both studying at California Polytechnic State University. Following their August 9, 1997, marriage, the couple launched a sports bar close to the college campus. After two years of operation, the Petersons sold The Shack and relocated to Modesto, California, to be near Laci’s family.
While in Modesto, Scott Peterson worked as a sales representative for Tradecorp, an agricultural corporation based in Spain, while his spouse held a part-time position as a substitute teacher. After a year of infertility treatments, Laci became pregnant with a boy in May 2002, whom they planned on naming Conner.

Was “Gone Girl” Inspired by Laci Peterson?
No, not exactly. In a 2012 interview, Gillian Flynn addressed the claims that her novel “Gone Girl” was inspired by real-life events. She said that although any specific case didn’t inspire her book, real cases like Laci Peterson’s murder tend to fascinate and inspire her.
David Fincher and Gillian Flynn collaborated to create the 2014 American psychological thriller “Gone Girl.” The movie is based on Flynn’s 2012 book of the same name. Its cast includes Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris, and Carrie Coon.
In the movie, Affleck’s character, Nick Dunne, is the main suspect in his wife Amy Pike‘s unexpected abduction in Missouri. While “Gone Girl” isn’t exactly about Laci’s murder, Peacock’s docuseries “Face to Face with Scott Peterson” aims to explore the murder story.
