Speaking out, Scarlett Johansson explains why she declined to be the chatbot’s voice actor for OpenAI. The 39-year-old actress was contacted by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman last year regarding a possible job offer to provide voice work for the ChatGPT 4.0 system.
Johansson, who portrayed Samantha, an artificial intelligence virtual assistant in the 2013 movie “Her,” recalled that she said, “No, thank you,” in an interview with The New York Times. Not for me,” she said in response to Altman’s request regarding the gig. “I felt I did not want to be at the forefront of that,” Johansson further told the Times. “I just felt it went against my core values.”
Scarlett Johansson’s Concerns about her Children
Johansson established that her choice to reject the project was influenced by her anxieties about her children’s reactions. The “The Avengers” star has a 9-year-old daughter with ex-husband Romain Dauriac, 42, and also a 2-year-old son Cosmo with husband Colin Jost, 42.
“I prefer not to kiss and tell. “He came to me with this, and I didn’t tell anybody except my husband,” Johansson said of getting Altman’s employment proposal. “I also felt that for my children it would be strange,” she remarked. “I try to be mindful of them.”

Johansson Skeptical About AI
Fox News Digital has reached out to OpenAI reps for comment. Johansson told the site that she is concerned about AI, which she describes as “nebulous,” and its potential future repercussions.
OpenAI introduced its ChatGPT in May, with a voice called “Sky.” Many onlookers noted at the time that Sky’s voice was strikingly similar to Johansson’s. On the same day the technology was released, Altman took to X, then known as Twitter, and simply tweeted “her.”
A Shocking Occurrence
Johansson later issued a statement, stating, “When I heard the leaked recording, I was astonished, angry, and in disbelief that Mr. Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so hauntingly similar to mine that my closest friends and news outlets couldn’t tell the difference.
“Mr. Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘her,’ a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human,” stated Johansson.

Johansson further told the Times that “when that voice was introduced into the wild, it was surreal.” “All of a sudden, I started receiving these messages.” “I had actively avoided being a part of the conversation, which was what made it so disturbing,” she explained.
In her May remarks, Johansson also stated that her legal team had given the tech corporation two letters requesting that it explain how it came up with the personal assistant’s voice in its artificial intelligence technology.
An Apology was Issued
Altman later provided a statement to FOX Business referencing Sky’s voice.
“Sky’s voice is not Scarlett Johansson’s, and it was never intended to be like hers. Before reaching out to Ms. Johansson, we cast the voice actor who will play Sky. We have temporarily suspended the usage of Sky’s voice in our goods out of respect for Ms. Johansson. “We apologize to Ms. Johansson for not communicating better,” the statement additionally read.
