The fight between New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Texas Governor Greg Abbot has taken a new twist. This time, bus companies, Abbott’s collaborators, are at the receiving end.
Adams, the Democrat mayor of America’s largest city, has sought punishment for multiple bus companies in court. 17 of them, to be precise. These charter bus companies struck a deal with the Republican Texas governor to transport migrants to New York City.
Adams hopes to convince the court to award at least $708 million from the transportation companies. He has accused the companies of bringing over 30,000 migrants to the city. A move he says has over-stretched the city’s public assistance programs.
This move is one in a series of efforts between Adams and Abbott to outsmart each other. However, both have been at loggerheads for over a year over the Texas governor’s policy of transporting migrants to blue states. Specifically, large blue states.

Abbott has been busing migrants who have come into his state through the Southern border. This is his way of protesting against what he says are the Democrats/Biden’s lax border policies. Blue cities such as New York City, Denver, Washington, and Chicago have been the most popular destinations.
Moreover, the money Adams is asking the court to award is what he believes Abbott’s actions have cost his city since the spring of 2022. New York City has had to provide shelter and care for all the migrants from Texas.
Adams declares the bus companies acted in bad faith by participating in Abbott’s plan. He says Texas has, by its actions, transferred its financial responsibility to New York City which is a violation of New York’s 19th-century Social Services Law. Furthermore, he has accused the transporters of benefitting from the illegality.

Adams alleges “evil intent” in the company’s actions. He is pointing the courts to the high profit margins the companies have benefitted from Texas. He said the companies that are based in Texas, Iowa, California, and Ohio have benefited five times more than the actual cost of the job.
The lawsuit mentions a November report from the news website Axios that uncovered Texas’s expenditure for the bus rides. According to the report, Texas spent about $1,650 per person from April 2022 to October 2023. The normal cost for such one-way tickets should have been $291, the report revealed.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) added her voice in support of the mayor. “It’s about time that the company’s facilitating actions take responsibility for their role in this ongoing crisis,” she said. Hochul accused Abbott of using the helpless migrants as political pawns.

Abbott has laughed off the pushback from the mayor and governor, calling their complaints “baseless.” Abbott wants Democrats to have a taste of their own medicine.
“It’s clear that Mayor Adams knows nothing about the Commerce Clause of the U.S Constitution,” Abbott said. “or about the constitutional right to travel that has been recognized by the U.S Supreme Court,” he further said.
The Democratic party has encouraged illegal migration through the United States Southern Border. Many Democrat cities also have sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants. An attitude that has angered Red states, who suffer the most from the influx of illegals.
