The New Year brought good tidings for Donald Trump and his legal team as they got a small breakthrough on the second day of the year. Not that it means the former POTUS can now rest easy, as there are still legal woes ahead.

A U.S. district court judge sponsored the said breakthrough. It involved the dismissal of most of the civil counts against former President Donald Trump and several others for their part in the death of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick.

The honorable man passed away while defending the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Sicknick’s partner, Sandra Garaza, is one of those who felt the loss keenly. She is also one of those fighting for justice to prevail.

To that end, she filed a lawsuit last January, alleging wrongful death, conspiracy to violate civil rights, two counts of negligence under an anti-riot law in Washington, D.C., and a claim under the D.C. Survival Act.

Unfortunately, on Tuesday, January 2, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, threw out three of the five counts. All that remains is the conspiracy to violate the civil rights charge and the D.C. Survival Act claim.

As earlier stated, this is most likely a win for Trump and his fellow defendants, but only a small one since the lawsuit will still proceed with the core allegations.

Sicknick lost his life in the January 6 attack after rioter Julian Khater sprayed him with a chemical spray from less than eight feet away. This caused Sicknick to collapse, and he died the following day at a local hospital.

According to the District of Columbia’s Chief Medical Examiner, Sicknick died of natural causes. However, “all that transpired on [January 6] played a role in his condition” and ultimately led to his death.

Sicknick’s demise is only one of the outcomes of the capitol riot that shook the nation on January 6, 2021. And America is yet to recover completely. Arrests are still being made as authorities gradually track down more perpetrators from the dreadful day.

On January 6, 2024, United States authorities announced the arrest of three people wanted in connection with the assault on the US Capitol. Their names are Jonathan D Pollock, 24, his sister, Olivia M Pollock, 33, and Joseph D Hutchinson, 27.

They were arrested at a ranch in Groveland, Florida, according to the FBI, and have been arraigned. All are facing charges of assaulting officers, violent entry into the Capitol, and other felonies.
